Funny thing about this goal is it comes from us winning the ball back high up, which is the most prominent feature of McCannball. He'll have known we're good at it and tried to tell his new team to be careful in those areas and try to avoid getting caught in possession but obviously it didn't work.
High pressing football is the modern game. Not many successful managers anymore who deploy low blocks, Mourinho, Conte and co all starting to see less success over prolonged periods with a single side they’re the new Allardyce short term fix managers
I listened to the local bbc radio on the way home. The presenters remarked how much he has improved with the media since his last stint with them . Makes you wonder how bad he was.
All McCann did this week was drill into anybody that would listen, BE AFRAID OF KLP. A self fulfilling prophecy.
I don’t care how bad Peterborough were, that was a fabulous performance. First ten minutes or so I was getting worried, as we looked like we were playing a back five and pumping hopeful balls up to an isolated Smith. What was the formation in the first half? 2nd half it was clearly 3-4-2-1. But at the start it looked ominous. Then we slowly gained control, and quickly it became a great performance. KLP and Fleming the stand outs for me, but everyone else played really well, including the subs. Wilks even made a few passes when he came on. Fab support too. Most fun I’ve had at a Hull City game for a long time, topped off with a selfie with Gorgeous George. What a diamond he is.
I love away local phone ins when we've done them. We might freeze in the headlights once every few games, but BBC Cambridgeshire and BBC Herts have made entertaining listening over a few bottles toninght....
Short term fix. Didn't say he's ****e obviously isn't, he's still one of the best but he's not someone you rebuild with. His style is becoming less and less effective at the top level of the game now. None of the top teams play like Conte sets up.
9 points from the remaining games we'll deffo be OK. Massive result. Performance proved they're playing for the future, not the past.
No. Tyler was the forward spur with KLP, George/Walsh as inverted wingers breaking out wide from a dual no 10 position. Worked well. Almost a 'plan b' after Tuesday one might say...
Fair enough, KLP seemed quite high up the pitch, far more than either Honeyman or Walsh for most of the game, felt to me more like KLP was playing alongside Smith, but I guess it's much of a muchness.
Was the opposite of Tuesday, we wanted it more from minute 1 to 90. Nominal formation is irrelevant. We won our battles.
Relevant insofar as we need a second striker providing support and pressure on the defence, good to see the adaptation from the 'hoof it up forward' from the last few games to the isolated striker. Hope when Forss/Eaves are back fit we continue with it.
One thing you can say about this group is they have a bad performance but seem to have the ability and confidence to bounce straight back. That performance was chalk and cheese compared to Tuesday. Shota touched on it in his post match interview, but 3 at the back and playing wing-backs are tailor-made for this group of players. An old adage, don't put square pegs in round holes. Alfie Jones is IMO a much better defensive centre back than Bernard, Bernard does have a reckless challenge in him, whereas Jones is solid as a rock and organises the back 3 well. All 3 center backs had good games and kept what threat they offered, which wasn't much, very quiet. All 5 across midfield plus Walsh when he came on controlled everything, Fleming playing wing back and KLP being further up the pitch is a great partnership, born in the U23's. Special mention for Regan Slater, who slotted into the right wing back position very well. KLP was unplayable, they couldn't handle him, he just tore them apart. Finally, wonderful Tyler Smith gets his goal, he worked tirelessly and deserved it. What I particularly liked was he missed a chance more or less identical to the one he scored, but the second time he learned from that and executed his chance well. Even though our performance against Barnsley was poor, it seems they have found form and after being 3-0 against M'Boro, still came out winners 3-2. So maybe losing to them wasn't quite as bad as we first thought. Clearly, Grant was brought in to get them back into the Championship, because they looked doomed.
