He is no where near Cabella's/Cabaye quality, & De Jong is no way near Gomes quality. I suspect The mighty powers at nufc are signing Plan B players. Window has failed for me already just by targeting 2nd rate players.

This French football critic disagrees with you regarding who is better out of Grenier and Cabella:

If #nufc had the luxury of choosing between #cabella and #grenier then I'd choose latter. Fans would love them both.

The full story from GFN France is more promising than their tweet:

Newcastle bid for Clement Grenier turned down

Over the weekend, Newcastle made a €13m bid for Lyon attacking midfielder Clement Grenier which was rebuffed we understand.

We reported the aforementioned bid on Monday and Sky Sports’ reports of a ‘substantial bid’ for Grenier is likely to be Newcastle’s second concrete approach for the player although we are unable to confirm that a second bid has been made past the first €13m bid we already reported at the start of this week.

As far as we are concerned, Lyon remain in talks with Newcastle for the player and the Tyneside club has already had a proposition turned down.

We await further developments today.

Relieving news if true, but again what is Kinnear being paid to do?

Matthew Balmforth ‏@Matt_Rant 14m

@MsiDouglas Be interesting to see reaction to Kinnear if he gets this 'over the line'. Can't really throw at him he's not been quick to act.

Mark Douglas ‏@MsiDouglas 13m

@Matt_Rant He's not particularly heavily involved Matthew.

With the selling of Cabaye if and its a big IF, we can get can De Jong and Grenier I would be pretty happy but I reckon we will get one and that being De Jong.

Could be right - it's out of Pardew's hands and he made the same noises in August, saying "I MUST HAVE A STRIKER, IT HAS TO HAPPEN, I CANNOT SEE A WORLD WHERE I DONT GET ONE"....only to be found on the 1st September muttering something about a line....

I remain optimistic that we'll get two players, possibly three. I think De Jong was happening anyway (and in no way is he worse than Bafe Gomis), Cabella is a certainty but possibly in the Summer rather than now (and is the replacement for Jonas), Grenier is the replacement for Cabaye.

This is what NUFC do - I don't buy this "selling club" crap. I think we're an upcycler, we constantly try and replace what we have with slightly better. Simpson < Debuchy. Gosling < Gouffran. Nolan < Cabaye. Enrique < Santon (because he's always injured, mainly!). So it follows that 23 year old Grenier has every chance to be better than Cabaye, Cabella > Jonas and De Jong > the empty space that Ba left.

The numbers are normally down to Lee Charnley who closed out most of our previous deals.
He's a very shrewed cookie by all accounts.

Call me a cynic lads, but this stinks of your club saying 'look at us, we are trying to sign a top replacement', when in all reality the player is unachievable, given the clubs that would move if he became available.

Smashing player Grenier,no doubt about that.

I've been seeing suggestions that we accepted £20million for Cabaye rather than holding out for £25million so that the transfer would go through quickly, thus leaving enough time to get a replacement in.

This public announcement that we've been for someone... I don't trust our intentions. Sounds like a smokescreen for the fans so that in the end we can hear again everything was tried but we don't pay stupid money. So lame.

Whenever we've been serious bout signing someone the first we heard was when we signed them. Like with Cisse Sissoko Debuchy or Gouf. Whenever weve been "chasing" a target we never get it.

Pardew impressed me and got me thinking with his post match comments yesterday. He talked about closing the gap on the top 4 and try to qualify for the champions league in future seasons. He rightly claimed that the only way we or any other club that either doesn't have a multi billionaire owner or doesn't put the club at finanical risk can close the gap on the top 4 is to sell for silly money every now and again and replace with two or three players.

If, and at the moment it's a big if Grenier arrives then we've had a decent window IMO. I doubt Grenier will hit the ground running and produce Cabaye type performances, I've never even seen the lad play to be honest but by all accounts he's a more natural number 10 than Cabaye and at 23 he's still young. If we then get Cabella in the summer then we've done some good business. Not only that, it is the only logical way that we can close the gap on the top four.

I just think that any negativity should be saved until the end of the summer window, I know that's a long way off but if Grenier & Cabella and possibly othetrs arrive in the summer then we're heading in a nice direction, it's just a slow journey. In the last three years I honestly don't think any Premier League team outside of Man City & Chelsea (can't include them due to silly money) has signed better than us other than Arsenal in terms of value for money.

I wouldn't say I'm happy at the moment but I'm certainly content and prepared to be patient. If we get Grenier in this window then it will completely dispel the myth that we don't reinvest in the team.

You mean like Luuk De Jong?

Add Debuchy to that too. It was know for a good 12 months that he was a target.
