About 40 years ago, there used to be something called direct action. I'm not talking about extremism, just the fact Joe Public could go to the local town hall and see their leaders up on the stage and shout them down. You could make a difference. Not through spin and fcking focus groups whose views are largely dictated by their prejudices and the bullshit they're fed rather than what they're actually experiencing Gradually politics has been sanitised and spin and media control has made the politicians unprincipled and shallow. And it's made the public resigned to the system and apathetic to it all. Then something happened 4 years ago which exploded all of that but we came out of that apathy in the worst possible way, filled with tribalism and polarised positions, all about the win ffs! I don't want us to go back to the 1960's or 70's btw. I would just like to think we can evolve as a society in the 21st century where modern politics can function with the public having the power to be up close and personal with their politicians and hold them to account.
