Got to agree, we can't get back into the mess we were in. It's not sustainable.
But if WE as a big club in the Championship can't afford to offer high enough wages then surely there comes a point where players will say they won't come here. There's a fine line between keeping things tight and affordable to paying over the top.
It's a well known fact that goal scorers command bigger wages. If we got say 15m for RS then ok. But if it's around 5m then it will cost more to replace him?! Am I missing something? Tbh I'm not bothered about RS staying or going due to his injury record. I'm thinking about the principal of our model moving forward.

Man Chitty are winning lots, cos their very rich owners have lots of lawyers and accountants that enable them to avoid FFP rules. So they have two world class players for every position.
Atm I do not know how much Stewart has asked for or how much we have offered, so I for one do not know how big the disconnect is, big or little.

On the subject of wages. There is a cracking report out by a company called LCP. Talks about sustainability. Basically football is knackered and surviving on owner support. There is a frightening stat about clubs spending more on wages than they earn. The championship ia rife with. 2 yeara ago about 60% of the teams spent more than they earned. We too were at 125% a couple of years ago. Every club doing that are essentially on the brink. We dont want to be there again.
Another really interesting point made is the vulnerability of clubs to transfera in installments. The figures are mental. If one or two clubs actually do go pop, they coule drag others with them easily. Whole thing is like a pack of cards. Said this on here before but if I were selling a player today I would take £5m cash, rather than £8m in 4 installments. I bet our club know that and are factoring it in.

The thing about the model going forward is that as we improve, revenues should go up to reflect that, allowing for wages to go up accordingly. It might come where we hit a natural level and what we can pay can't go up any higher, but that's when the ownership will have to look at how we do things going from there. But, as it stands we aren't at that level yet, there's still plenty of scope for commercial growth. It's growing things naturally and organically, developing our own, but also adapting as the situation changes. We have to as fans think differently from how we've been previously, and it's going to take some getting used to. I'll back the model because we've seen how things can go badly wrong chasing the dream. I'm 50 now and remember the news headlines in 1987 about us being under threat of going out of business when McBastardley was in charge. How we screwed up in the later years of Murray's ownership and ended up skint with rumours of administration and that's not counting how we were losing over £20 million a year under Short. We can't keep repeating those mistakes, because we may well end up without a club. Looking at Derby, Sheffield Wednesday, Portsmouth, Reading, Barnsley, Bolton, Wigan, not to mention West Brom who are apparently in trouble, or Stoke, all of them have had issues involving finances, breaching FFP or trying some underhand accounting to get round it, and they are just a small example, there's others I've not thought about yet. I think the Accrington chairman is a gobshite, but I can see his point about football being broken and clubs risking their futures spending beyond their means chasing the dream and agree with him. If I'm honest I think more clubs will end up hit by financial problems and if they're lucky enough to come out of it they'll follow their own version of "the model".
