Nah it's not. It's agreed that our recruitment over last couple of years has been poor.
Yeah I wouldn't disagree with that. They've taken their eye off the here and now and focused too much on the future. This summer has taken some steps to rectify that. Add an experienced striker and maybe another defender and we aren't far off.

Of course there is a worry about the quality below the 1st team - if and when Cirkin, Alese, Roberts and Neil get injured is what we have next in line good enough? Not that I think we will address that potential deficiency any time soon mind you...

Ah ok, we'll just ignore all the reports (some of which you have retweeted yourself and commented on) linking us to Mendy. We'll also ignore the owner saying we need "a striker who scores goals" so it fits your argument on here. Ok then.
Not sure where you're coming from here, I'm just saying the longer it is going on and recent reports from french journalists is making me worry a bit. I'm not sure why you're getting so defensive about it - the fact it has went on this long and we are hearing we are offering nowhere near his valuation doesn't show me we have "money to spend on a cf"

Burnley played 8 more games than us, so it's not really a realistic comparison.

But you know that already.

Over the course of the season we still only watched our team get beat on two less occasions, so the argument about not wanting to watch us get beat every week still stands..?

are we, where is your evidence mate, the only evidence we have is that french journalists were saying our offer was insulting "he's not a packet of crisps"

I think there are a few things going on.

Firstly, RLBs remit is to coach the lads and pick a team to win football matches, he will have some kind of limited input into recruitment but I'd doubt he is involved in the day-to-day of transfers beyond periodic meetings to update those involved. So he will not be offering up extensive takes on the striker position and how desperate we are or aren't to sign one. That isn't his job.

Secondly, the club probably do not want to say outright that we're trying to recruit a striker for obvious reasons, the same reason it was ill advised to use the word "imminently" in the statement about hiring a head coach, the backlash isn't worth whatever they'd get by saying they're looking for a striker. It's a lose-lose unless fans can find a way to make it a win-win for the club.

Finally, it seems to me we have really dialled in on Mendy and are seeking a very, very specific profile for the striker, like applying filters to a list of 1000 strikers and it gives you 5 results, and only 1 is available for transfer, that sort of specific. That is a dangerous game, but it means you are playing an all or nothing strategy, if you win you get exactly what you need.

People can whinge about that last part but that's what it looks like to me and unless you plan on breaking into the AOL for a meeting with Speakman and co, you will have to live with that.

Would we have signed poveda if he wasn't free? Doubful.

We need to invest and spent a fee on an experienced striker. Currently fee outplay is zero.
You have no idea if we would have signed poveda if there was a fee involved. We have spent money every window apart from this 1 so far. It's good business to get players like Browne and poveda for free instead of a transfer fee.

That's my worry about that last part, if we don't get him, we are stuck without a cf who can actually score goals again. I don't think the fans will let it pass them by this time either. A lot can change though but from current signs is it wrong to be worried?

So the fact we agreed a fee (using actual money) with Caen doesn't show you that we have money to spend on a cf?

Really?

We have not agreed a fee? in fact it has been said we have offered well below his valuation nd he is not "a packet of crisps" this is from a french journalist. Nowhere anywhere does it say we have agreed a fee.

It's been well documented we agree a deal with Caen's previous owner. The new lot have come in and want more money. Don't pretend you don't already know this

You have no idea if we would have signed poveda if there was a fee involved. We have spent money every window apart from this 1 so far. It's good business to get players like Browne and poveda for free instead of a transfer fee.

Browne was linked with moves away last summer with bids of £3.5m being knocked back, they were asking for £5m, even we were linked to him. It's a great bit of business.

This isn't true, even Mendy's agent said the previous owners are to blame and not the new ones, they said he could leave but they didn't agree on a deal with us. People saying we agreed a fee with them are forum posters, no reports anywhere that suggest that is the case

"First of all, and to make things clear, I wanted to thank the Mbappé clan who welcomed Alex and showed their commitment to the player. It is important to clarify for the supporters that the new investors are not responsible for this situation. Today, it is Pierre-Antoine Capton who has committed to letting Alex go, even freely. After more than two months of negotiations, Pierre-Antoine Capton has never intervened to keep his commitments and I hold him primarily responsible. As a former footballer, I am astounded by the behavior of the former management. How can we imagine that the player can be mentally ready for the upcoming season after having been betrayed in this way? I fight against all forms of injustice in this environment and what is happening, currently, is not tolerable. Trust has been broken ," raged the advisor of the 30-year-old striker. And to conclude: "I would like to thank all the supporters for the messages of support for Alex, who carries SM Caen in his heart and who has always respected the institution" . It remains to be seen whether the different parties will manage to find common ground in the coming weeks. Determined to fly across the Channel to embrace a new exciting challenge at the Stadium of Light, Alexandre Mendy expects nothing less ...

Browne is absolutely. We needed him. Poveda not sure and that's why I said doubful if there was a fee or 2m involved.

I read at the time of him signing for us that Poveda isn't on a big wage, (£5-8k) but that his appearance bonus makes up for it, so if he ends up injured most of the time it's isn't such a burdensome transfer for us. He was subject to bids last summer as well with Leeds hoping for £2m, I think Blackpool couldn't afford that much, but there were definitely takers last summer. It's decent business with a little bit of risk admittedly.

Said hypothetical arguments are a waste of time after just starting one lol.

It’s not common knowledge that the new ownership have stopped Mendy leaving. You can’t shoot down anyone who mentions that KLD won’t pay what they want as “nonsense rumours” then claim it’s common knowledge for the other side of the argument. Nobody knows, we just all have our own suspicion of what’s stopping the move at the minute.

We’ve done smart business so far, Browne is a really good move. Not too sold on Poveda but I mentioned in another thread the other day I was talking to a professional footballer the other day who’s got a lot of experience at championship level and he reckons Poveda is out of this world.

That aside, frees should be like bonus transfers to me. If you set aside £5m to improve the squad then sign a player on a free that you value at £5m then surely that doesn’t stop you strengthening elsewhere with the budget you have.
