There seems to be lots who are not valuing Greaves here. I think he’ll be key to our success this season (if we have any). From what I’ve seen of him (since the takeover), he is consistent, has lots of potential and always gives 100%. I think it’s fantastic that he’s a Hull lad and that his dad is a City legend. I’d hate to lose him!

I would argue that he is a bit more than a promising player.

He has become an established left-footed centre back at Championship level. He is comfortable on the ball, can pick a pass, he’s strong in the air and whilst not being rapid he very rarely gets done for pace. He’s aggressive, strong in the tackle and yet he’s got a good level head on his shoulders and communicates well. He also appears to be a popular player in the dressing room.

On the downside he is occasionally clumsy, mistimes some tackles and gives away more penalties than he should.

I think he is 2 seasons away from being at Premier league level but with left footed centre backs being at a premium, I can see why Premier League clubs might be interested in an early investment.

Average? By what standard. Sure he can be replaced, but by who and at what cost. We should try and keep him.

I agree, I'd be much sadder to see Greaves go than KLP.

He's looked great so far this year and his improvement from 12 months ago is vast and that's always great to see as a fan

Course I'd rather he stayed, you can't seriously think how I have worded that assumes I want him gone. It alludes to if he keeps playing silly bugger and doesn't want to sign then keep for a year or sell in jan? Jesus wept...
 
I have no problem with him and his agent trying to get the best deal possible and putting his name out there to suss out the market, but what he needs consider is, what has he actually achieved in his career that would justify such a wage increase?

"If" (and it's a big IF) he is expecting a similar wage as the experienced pros with the calibre of Seri and Tufan then someone needs to have a chat with him and give him a reality check!

He also needs to ask himself, is it what Jacob Greaves wants or is it what Jacob Greaves' Agent* wants because quite often, those are two different things.

When you look at his career, He's had one relegation, one promotion and one finish in 19th position and during that time, there have been so many more "OK" performances then "Outstanding", he's still prone to a few errors in his game, he switches off and he's not blessed with incredible pace to get him back out of trouble.
It does not say to me "this lad is a Premier League defender"

But he'll learn but surely he'd be better learning in familiar surroundings and in a team and club he knows inside out??

I have no doubt the lad does have potential, but to me, that is the only thing his agent can use to build up his case to force a wage rise because he is nowhere near a £30k/wk footballer...

Yet.

* TBH, I've no idea who his agent is- could be reputable, could be a ****bag like KLP's

I think playing every single minute in a top 12 defence last season (on goals conceded) at his age is a pretty reasonable point in his favour.

Harsh to put a relegation on his CV when he was out on loan at the time.

It’s one thing to say maybe Greaves isn’t ready for the PL yet, and another to say he’s overrated and easily replaceable. This is a young kid who played every game last season in a team that despite finishing 19th, actually had a top-half defensive record. I believe he’d walk into most starting XIs in this division. There’s weaknesses to his game, but he is one of the best left-footed centre-halves in the Championship and not as easily replaceable as some make out.

If you take him out of our squad, either through injury or a transfer, it’s a massive loss that would affect the spine of the team. His role can’t be filled-in by McLoughlin and we’d be hard-pressed to find another left-footed centre-half who would settle in the Championship and wouldn’t cost more than we’d sell Greaves for.

We don’t need to sell Greaves if he won’t sign a new contract. If we keep him for another year, we have time to look for his replacement & still get a decent fee for him.
It’s the same principal as running a car in to the ground before replacing it. If you get a year more out of the car, then that means you’ve had the use of it for one more year, in that time, you’re in no rush to get a new one, you’re not spending money on it, other than running costs & in a years time, the car will have done its job, be worth a bit less & then you might even get a cheaper one to replace it with, or not, but either way, it’s road worthy & doing its job getting you around.
