I agree that in an ideal world, we should keep both, but if Targett is as good as Luke, then how long will he want to play second fiddle to him?, he would surely want to move on to help to develop his career at First team level.

He isn't as good as Shaw atm, better at crossing and corners and that's it.

One thing you have overlooked Jasper, if he is worth £30m at age 18, what is he going to be worth at age 23? (remember Bale)....Selling him now is just short term thinking, UNLESS the club rate Matt Targett's prospects as highly as Luke's.

I wouldn't sell Shaw unless he wants to leave but I don't really agree with this. I don't think Bale is a good benchmark because he's a freak - a promising left back that became one of the world's best attacking midfielders. Most promising left backs that develop well become very good left backs, not attacking midfielders.

From memory, Shaw is a better defender than Bale at the same age but there's nothing to suggest he'll become an attacking midfielder - he's not banging in free kicks from distance or storming forward in quite the same way Bale used to. I expect Shaw to stay a full back and £30m is a lot of money for any defender.

Ok, then we should keep Luke for as long as we possibly can and not take the first decent offer for him as he could be worth three times that amount in the future.

well he will be worth three times as much in the future. inflation will take care of that. inflation adjusted, he's already at the top end of left back valuations, how much further can he really go? if we can use the money now there's an argument for taking it. If we can't our buying power with the fee will erode.

Again Avery fair comment SA. What if he does not to be that great, or even worse let's it all go his head? not saying that will happen, but he is still just18.

I find it odd that anyone would want us to sell luke. I mean sure if he is desperate to go and we get a good offer sure I'll begrudgingly say that it's probably for the best. But I'd still be upset at loosing a hugely exciting academy product. That's what great about saints, seeing youngsters make their first few appearances and grow into great players like Adam, I'd much rather that then go and buy some equivalent player who has no connection to the club. I guess it's all just economics now, where did the romance go?

My point still stands up, it's a safe bet that Luke will be a better, more rounded player in 5 years and probably an England international and we would've benefitted from having him playing for us...it is short termism that helped to get us relegated nearly a decade ago.

Some people seem to think that there is a price that triggers the sale of Luke (or any other player) as if we were solely dealing with a commodity. If we don't need the money and he is part of the future plans, then he won't be sold. It would be an interesting conversation...Luke, you know how we spoke of loyalty and how much better it would be for your career to stay here...well, forget that...we've been offered 30mill.

I think the assumption is that if anyone wants to spend 30m on luke that he won't be facing the prospect of bench duty and he'll be offered mind blowing personal terms.

but yeah it's unlikely the club would push him to leave.

As often, in a nutshell, Fran.

The same goes for any key player that Saints value highly.

I'd sell Luke for £30m. I can't see his value rising that much more like others are saying and I'm sure you could buy a quality replacement if Targett isn't up to scratch yet for a third of that.

The comparisons to the Bale fee are laughable. Shaw will never be a Bale. If anyone could go that route it is Chambers who may well move forward eventually.

Good job you aren't incharge then.

indeed. Not saying I want him to leave, just that £30m would be a softener to say the least :) I trust in NC

Yes.

Refusing a transfer request for Shaw is simply denying him the chance of pursuing an opportunity. I have no idea how this shows any loyalty on the part of the player, who has been given no choice. Or on the part of the club who is refusing the transfer because it doesn't suit THEIR interest.

I keep saying it. If you want to demonstrate how loyal you are to the player then you would accept all transfer bids and match the highest one. That's telling the player he means more to you than any other club. Simply refusing to allow a player to leave doesn't demonstrate anything.
