The money, and whether he is worth it, is irrelevant. If good players like him stay then other academy products will see that it's normal for them to stay too, instead of looking for big moves.

Man City is quite capable of paying over the top to get the player they want...30 mill is a lot of money to pay for a lot of promise. It all depends on our financial position...could we get a replacement for Shaw plus other player(s) for that money. Is Shaw essential for Cortese's vision? Do we need money for Cortese's ambition? Do the Leihberrs want a return on their investment now? Personally, I doubt the offer (if it exists) is that high.

Wouldn't push Shaw out the door by any means, but if he wanted the move in the summer, 30m is more than sufficient.

Our vision is clear

If we keep our wage budget sensible there is enough TV money annually to invest in 2/3 top quality signings a season without the need to sell.

As has been mentioned , A very good point PTF .

It could also encourage players to want to join our academy simply because of the ( Possible ) riches that lie ahead ?

Fact still remains IMHO that we will use our academy as a source of revenue on occasion , we will simply have to .

Not really unless we get relegated. The money we get in the Prem is easily enough.

But if we hold on to our star players till they have reached there potential we will get so much more for them (e.g. Bale money), and get great players for a good length or time, and get the money involved in having good players (i.e. possible cups and higher league positions). In time then we will have a much more lucrative conveyor belt.

But we don't want a conveyor belt.

We will always produce more players than we need, but the Academy will be funded by players we sell on and money saved by not buying for the first team. Sometimes we will also sell very good youngsters if it funds buying a player we do need. The fact that Man City are going down the Academy route shows it makes long term financial sense.

or leon best and david mcgoldrick.

probably wouldn't have got the same money for them if we hadnt been forced to use them though. (and yes DMG seems to have found his feet again)

How many kids have we actually sold for meaningful money who haven't been good enough to play for us at the time?

Apologies if this has already been posted, but I thought this article was interesting just about as much from the Caligari perspective, as from the Saints view. Daily Echo, but I don't believe they are inventing anything here, just passing news through:

http://www.dailyecho.co.uk/sport/10...n_light_to_sign_Italian_international/?ref=ar

Yeah I'd heard about this. Pretty extraordinary for them to say that everyone's for sale, but there you go. Nothing at all to do with us of course, so the Echo are making that link themselves, but it does seem likely that Astori will leave Cagliari.

One thing you have overlooked Jasper, if he is worth £30m at age 18, what is he going to be worth at age 23? (remember Bale)....Selling him now is just short term thinking, UNLESS the club rate Matt Targett's prospects as highly as Luke's.

Or keep both?
