Absolutely.

I became a Sunderland fan because of a visit to roker park during the Peter Reid era before promotion. it was electric. I can remember thinking "wow imagine if this was in the premier" And then it was.

I want my daughters to think the same in a few years when I get to take them. They're 5 and 3 and hate football so we have a while to get our **** together first
I got let down scores of times by my dads uncle
I turned up at his house many times and he made excuses he couldn’t take me
It wasn’t until I was old enough to go on my own that I went to my first game
1964v derby county we won 3-0 22 nd February

I've tried to describe it to my Grandkids, but they don't really get it,because it's an alien concept to them now in all seater stadiums.
Seeing the crowd sway back and forth and the kids being passed overhead down to the front to keep them safe......it's beyond comprehension in the modern day.
It harks back to a time when good, working class people took care of their own...Hillsborough changed all that of course, and it was lost forever.

I was trying to explain that to my missus a while back and couldn't quite capture the feeling of standing at a match - the camaraderie of the folks around you and the swaying around after you scored and the days out on an away game. So to show here properly, I've always wanted to take her to a York v Pools away game, day out on the train, few beers and then head to York's ground. But now York's moved into a new all-seater so I doubt I'll ever get to show her!

Our time will come again mate. Standing areas may be allowed back. When we get back on our feet I'm sure there'll be opportunity for your missus to enjoy a visit to the Sol in all it's manic best.
My wife loved it,my Grandkids love it..despite none of them being from the area...away days are extra special when we're doing well though mind,so make sure she's primed up to what to expect!!

Oh she's been a few times. Her first match was the game against Reading when it was called off cos of the rain - we spent all afternoon in the Wetherspoon's pub in town! :emoticon-0102-bigsm Her last game was against Celtic pre-season and I think the atmosphere there unnerved her. We were sat right next to them in the east stand and even I could feel it changing. So after a thoroughly **** first half we retired to a pub to wait for the train home.

There is nothing like an away game I remember going to matches in the old third div and we would take 3 sides of the ground and you could see actual shock on the home fans faces.

Peter Wakeham..not many remember him now. My first visit was around that time, not sure, maybe '62.
Team was Wakeham,Irwin, Ashurst,Anderson,Hurley,McNab,Hooper,Herd,Clough,Fogarty and Overfield.
Wish I could remember the match,my Dad couldn't remember either,so no chance now!
Mind you,Roker was packed to the gunnels!
Each one a good player, Anderson, Hurley, McNab and Clough exceptional. If only we had their likes now...

I recall that Wakeham was no better than average for Sunderland and was transferred out. I can’t remember what club he went to but later we played them at Roker Park. It was towards the end of a season and as usual we were desperate for points to either get promotion or avoid relegation - promotion this time I think- and he played a blinder. We peppered his goal with shots on target, I think every team member had a shot, but he kept everything out. Then Harry Hooper, who was out of favour at the time having ballooned in weight, was brought on. We got a free kick and Hooper took it and scored a great goal. That was Hoopers last appearance for us. Ended up in non-league. Waste of a great talent.
I seem to remember Wakeham playing for Charlton in 1963 ish. That may be the game you are on about.

They came, they saw and were conkered ...

... this place will always settle down despite any smart arse troublemakers.

RTG will just go further and further down as the balance changes and the lunatics end up running the asylum.

The Mods, over there, are as weak as piss tbh.

I've never had an issue with the mods over there tbh but then again I'm not a prolific poster.
Much less so since i joined here.
They do seem to let mags and wums have free reign at times.
Again I've not had an issue with wums.
That said I'm not itk or as I've said a big poster so not really a target i suppose.
I'm unimportant and irrelevant, just how i like it :D

They are all over here now and you can tell

There's loads of good members over there that won't come here.
They either put up with the wums or stop posting. The latter being a shame.
I preferred it on here as it was quieter :D
The best way to deal with wums if they bother you is to ignore them.
You cannat punch them through a keyboard <laugh>

But if people are getting constantly trolled like Carty was then the mods need to step in.
Assuming it's brought to their attention.

Mind i do get trolled and sexually harassed by that @Makemstine Roger .
