The Cowley's took Concord Rangers from the Essex Senior League to the Conference South. That takes real ability. Those are tough leagues and they did it on a limited budget. The Isthmian North, which they had to go through is a league in which everyone can beat everyone else. They then took Lincoln from the Conference to League 1. That's progression up 6 steps of the pyramid. They then consolidated a club on a downward spiral at a 7th step. One brief flirtation with relegation at the highest level they'd reach after coming from where they came from doesn't constitute failure in my eyes. With a record like that, the adaptability and willingness to learn that they've had to show, they'd be exactly the kind of managers I'd put my faith into oversee a plan to manage us to the Premier League.
Mate of mine used to manage South Shields. They went up 4 or 5 tiers of the pyramid. Doesn't mean he's qualified to managed Sunderland

Nuno joined in the Championship, Kenny Jackett got them out of League One iirc

that was his point. It’s rare for the same manager to take the team from league one to the premier. And when it does happen, it’s frankly hardly ever going to be a ready made premier league manager otherwise they wouldn’t have dropped down to league one in the first place.

so the idea that we need to appoint somebody now who’s ready for the premier league now is absurd

Back on sky bet now with Cowley favourite, Poyet hasn’t exactly drifted far and is second favourite
Bookies haven't got a clue. Go and stick a decent bet on one of the options and watch the market shift noticeably.

Doesn't it? Why not? That shows real ability
Yes it does. It doesn't mean you can take a step up and deal with the pressure that comes with a huge job like SAFC

Football, for years has been a "put your medals on the table" industry. Like it or not, players respect manager with experience or a proven ability. You see it when Kane meets Mourinho for the 1st time in that Spurs documentary - he's totally overwhelmed by the presence of the guy

A non-league manager rocking up, telling Sunderland players what to do having never played professionally? Not a chance

Or like when Nuno Santo joined Wolves in league one and took them to the Premier league, or how Leeds appointed Bielsa in the third division and went all the way to the Premier league with them... oh wait ;)
Didnt realise bielsa had leeds in 3rd or santo brought wolves from 3rd div either. Thats cos they didnt.

Leonardo Jardim managed Sporting Lisbon
Carlos Alberto Perreira managed Brazil to the World Cup title.
