Away fans at the back of The Fulwell End will always matter . . . . 'cos it's ridiculous and we all know that it has ruined the atmosphere The club must know this, and I don't know why they don't 'fix it' so that the atmosphere that we were famous for has a chance of returning
Not sure the current owners would be aware of the previous atmosphere before the away fans were moved. The reason for the move, and the costs and upheaval to move them back maybe big factors in the current stance of leaving them where they are. I'm sure it was mentioned at a previous supporters liaison meeting?
After the Leeds game... I see Neil mentions "fans"... Who's staying to the end on Saturday to applaud The Wizards off the pitch?
Said previously that the acoustics in the premier concourse makes 100 away fans sound like 1000 if you happen to sit closer to that end of the stadium.
From where I sit in the Roker end it always sounded like we are the only part of the stadium that actually made any noise.. then I realised after sitting in the concourse a few times this season that the Roker End IS the only part of the stadium that makes any noise! I’m honestly not that arsed about people leaving early. I agree with others that it doesn’t look great but I’m sure some people have their reasons. If you’re going to be so vocal about people leaving early then I’d expect you sing your heart out at every given opportunity during the match not just sit on your hands quietly after shouting “come on” when the match kicks off.
It's almost as if there are 40,000 individuals that make up the crowd with 40,000 different lives and are not all the same
Away days have nearly always been better for atmosphere. There is that us against them mentality of being in a smaller group wanting to outdo the bigger group. I have always preferred away games, as an attending fan. I am going to sound like a miserable old fart now but the SOL has never had the atmosphere of Roker Park. In my opinion anyway. Every clubs fans, of a certain generation, say it was unreal to go there. I think modern all seater stadiums are a bit too sterile to be honest. I think back to some Roker Park atmospheres and still get goosebumps. Some of the games in the 80s against our friends from the other river were magic. When the big boys came to town we gave them something to think about. I remember Liverpool coming and Hansen saying after the atmosphere was impossible. Like many the one that maybe stands out was the Chelsea replay in the cup 92. The ground was clearly knackered by then, but man that night was unbelievable. Chelsea has plenty up and made some noise, but I was in the Fulwell those days and I honestly think it was better in there that night than any of the mag games I have beem too. Ears rang for a week and voice was totally done. Those were good times.
Tremendous night of beer and football. In those days we drunk in the Cliff. At the game was one of the last two seasons at Roker as there were four of us in the main stand seats Roker end... even they were on their feet when Armstrong buried that header. Agree with your comments about sol being a sterile experience. Hopefully they are working on improvements
I think we were in the Howard at that time for pre match bevvies. We were in the Derby for a long time, but moved to the Howard around then I think. It was a special night and when that header went in it was unreal. I dont think it ia just the SOL where the atmosphere is a bit stilted. Most new grounds I have been too are the same. Derbys new ground is nothing on the old baseball ground, although their south stand is canny when they are up for it. Stokes is even worse, mind getting in and out of that old ground was a gauntlet. The beuaty of away ends is you are all together, wanting a sing song. When we had standing areas you could migrate to say the back middle of the fulwell and knew everyone was up for a sing song. Songs got started much easier there and built around the ground. Bit harder nowadays.
Depends on how the game pans out. As long as every player on that pitch gives everything they can then the result is meaningless in terms of whether they deserve our applause at the end
