The best sources, as always, are the real journalists. NUFC getting closer to a signing, but still nowhere near completing any.

The Lyon president said a fee had been agreed.. but that was BEFORE Newcastle backed out due to Gomis' wage demands.

Same old, same old...

Happy to miss out on players if they 'aren't the right price' even if it is to the detriment of the playing squad.

Sorry, what trustworthy source are we relying on for this ?

The Lyon president himself said (on Twitter) that they had agreed a deal with Newcastle and the breakdown was due to player's demands.

Gomis issued a statement via a French journo that he had agreed terms.

So someone is lying!

The 'trustworthy sources' I tend to accept are either Mark Douglas, George Caulkin or Paul Fraser. They always seem to be the least sensational and the most accurate.

Newcastle would rather go without than pay over the odds. This has happened enough times surely to be obvious??

It would appear that someone is lying.

I've come to the conclusion that the safest bet is 'Don't Believe What You Read' when it comes to transfer activities.

As soon as I wake up every day,
I look at the papers to see what they say,
I know most what I read will be a lot of lies,
But then you learn really fast to read between the lines

Made for NUFC.

Right, so no one knows anything definite about anything except that, probably, someone wants more money than the club is prepared to pay.

We had a decade of paying whatever it took to sign any particular players and ended up with Geremi and Owen as a result. I have no nostalgia for those times.

Geremi was free. Still, not quite worth £0.

Neither would I, nor have I said anything to suggest I do.

Newcastle are right not to be held to ransom, but (a big but) doing so to the detriment of the team so often can't be good either.

Somehow, somewhere along the line we have to make a compromise because we can't go into the season with the current attacking options we have or we'll struggle badly.

If we manage to end up signing no one (or just Bent) then we will have ****ed up hugely. If we end up with new signings not available for the first couple of games of the season but save some millions of pounds, that is a debatable trade off.

Need to see how the next few days pan out

Jean Michel Aulas believes that Marseille are bluffing with their interest for Bafetimbi Gomis. #OL #OM

Jean Michel Aulas also agrees that Newcastle are the right club for Bafetimbi Gomis. #OL #NUFC

The Aulas quotes supposedly claiming a deal was agreed with #NUFC for Gomis have since been withdrawn from the L'Equipe website (@RBairner)

No doubt.

Also seems to be a lot of rumours that West Ham are now in for Remy - at the 'advanced negotiations' stage.

It'd be a fecking disgrace to lose out to West Ham, what, three times? (Carroll, Maiga and now Remy)

I agree with Pardew that we can only pay what a player is worth, but by the same token a player is worth precisely whatever someone is willing to pay. That's why I didn't agree with the Carroll situation - if West Ham want to pay £15m, then that's what he's worth and if Pardew/NUFC wanted the player then that's what they'd have to pay.

I am still very, very confused by it all. I just cannot fathom how it takes our club so goddam long to do something. It's not like we're buying Fabregas or Bale, we're in for sub-£10m players and still pi$$ around over £1m here or there. I do understand the stance of frugality, but I think we're doing so just to 'act' tough, to prove our point. I say "we", when we all know (as per the Joey Barton interview) that it's Mike Ashley taking the stance. Sure, no player is worth what the parent club says, but we've got to be better at negotiating than this. I mean, wtf is holding up a LOAN move for chrissakes?!

There's that glimmer of optimism that we're doing what Norwich, or Swansea, are doing - holding conversations with no-ones knowledge then WHAM "Hooper's having a medical" or "Bony signs". The comments from the Marseille president about Ayew offer me some hope that we're aiming high and left of centre (Ayew would trump everyone we've talked about so far). What I fear, however, is that Pardew has actively mentioned Remy, Gomis and Bent for about a fortnight and we still know nothing. The issue we have is that West Ham wouldn't hesitate to offer that bit more to get the man, whereas Ashley will - to my mind - operate too much like a stubborn c*nt. He knows that whatever happens his job, his investment and the money he's owed will be exactly the same. When you've got £1bn in the bank, it's probably easier to sleep at night. Newcastle could even go under and, ultimately, he'd still be a billionaire. Makes you think, eh?

Fcking hell. £90k a week and £9m? NUFC don't have that. Tell a lie - we HAVE it, we just won't pay it. Hell, if Lyon's price was £6m, we'd only offer £5m. If they were asking for a Snickers bar, we'd throw a Fudge on the table.

No way are we going to offer £80k p/w (€92k p/w). Will smash our wage structure and cause issues with our current top earners that we def don't want.

I think we could be convinced to go close to the £8.75m fee but not those wages

I wouldn't trust Aulas to tell me the time. He can't seem to keep a story straight from one day to the next.

Two days ago he said that Lyon and NUFC had agreed a fee but the move had stalled because of a 3,000 euro per week pay issue with Gomis. He has said all sorts of odd things since, and then retracted them. Now he says that the fee is 10 million (which we will never have agreed) and that Gomis wants £92k/week (which we won't have come anywhere near 3,000 euros of).

Forget what this idiot says.

Forget what this idiot says.

From all the quotes from Aulas, I get the impression he's trying to publicly scare off Marseille... knowing full well that Gomis' preferred destination would be there.

Lyon don't want to sell him to another team in France (read that last week... can't find the link though, ahem)

No way on Earth would Newcastle offer 10m or anywhere near those wages quoted.
