I'm happy with this, it's risk free for a season and allows us to sign Rojo as well. If he has a good season, then £10million is still small change from the Shaw deal.

He's played for England and in a Champions League final so has experience. If he does sign permanently, he won't need to leave to chase Champ league football as he's been there, done that and won the blooming thing!

Give the guy a chance, he's a Saint for now and at the moment that's saying something.

Saying 10m is small change from the Shaw deal doesn't stop 10m being a lot of money for Betrand. Hopefully we just have him on loan for this season. I'm ok if Targett plays most of the games and hope Betrand isn't being brought in for first team match day squad.

Or he is so brilliant that 10 m is a bargain. Can't lose here...he's not blocking us from signing other people...we only made the 25 last season by including players who'd never get near the pitch. Let's wish him the best and see how it pans out.

Fran I have already said he is ok if brought in as back up. I just hope he stays back up is all.

He won't keep out players brought for 9m+ tho will he? He will then become 3rd choice as I can't see us playing a back three. Koeman uses 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1. I am just saying if that is the case and both are brought in then Fonte deserves more.

Look how pumped up he is for playing for Saints and wearing the arm band, now imagine if they took that away.

The trouble is that people's attitude is making me defend someone I know little about. We've bought players that got everyone excited who turned out to be underwhelming...my only real point is that you can never know. The chances are that a top player will be more successful than an average player, but surprises happen. We also need some PL experience, which Bertrand has. He may not be a marquee signing, but he has experience and incentive to do well. He may be poor for us...who knows...but we shouldn't wish it on him.

But then Targett is pushed further down then even last year. So we Koeman etc have been hyping him up for no reason at all.

Him or Van Dijk; I think signing both would be overkill. Vlaar can come in for depth, and we can keep Fonte in the team.
