Yep, totally agree with that. In the past teams didnt know what do with attacking midfielders who arent quite strikers such as Totti, Baggio and closer to home Barmby and Koren. The tendency was to try them in a hole behind a front 2 but that left the midfield far too exposed. The best way to utilise them now is to play 1 true striker with 3 attacking midfielders who burst forward right across the width of the pitch to almost become a second striker / out and out winger with the assurance of holding midfielders protecting the defence. Of course this means your 3 attacking midfielders have to cover an exceptional amount of ground - ideally interchanging at all times - and be extraordinarily fit otherwise your 1 striker becomes isolated.
different systems suit different players.
With world class players you can be effective with anything, 4.3.3, 4.5.1 or even a bog standard 4.4.2
Regarding teams like ourselves, 5.3.2 makes sense. An extra body in the box to defend and an extra one in midfield to cope with their midfield. The two upfront is key so we have a goal threat when we do get the ball. Rather than all out defending playing for a draw like last time !
