Could very easily. Bruce always insisted on five( though some on here would say it was to give Alex a contract). It gave him the option to play three at the back. We often do when hanging on at the end.
I think it's unrealistic to talk about us signing a first choice centre back. Jones and Greaves are very highly regarded at this level. Smith going out does seem to leave us light on numbers so it would be nice to have another for numbers, but on the other hand Smith never plays anyway; when Jones isn't available we play with two left-footers ahead of playing him. We have 3 CBs with extremely good availability records and it's basically unprecedented that two of them are missing at the same time. Obviously it's not impossible and anything can happen, but if we're operating on budgets and making pragmatic decisions, this does seem to be the one area we can afford to take more of a risk on.
I would have liked Dishon Bernard back, not necessarily as a first choice, but his pace would give us some options along with depth. Probably just me though.

Is this a new SPOT THE BALL competition for site users... if so, can we have a larger version of the net please...
Other clubs have offered £4.2 million, apparently we have offered £3 million (possibly on a loan to buy again). They are quoting £6.8 million but only a direct sale. Anyway you look at it, it’s a lot of money to spend on the Twine replacement. Unless he’s an unreal talent, of which I have no idea
I should have added that apparently we are his preferred destination. I wouldn’t put it past Acun to pull some manoeuvres in the background to leverage a sale to us.
Only problem being he's not got long to do it. Granted, we don't know how long our interest has been there for - but it sounds like it took quite some time to finalise the Philogene deal which was also 'manoeuvred'. Will be interesting if we ever find out what happens in this instance.
