We very, very rarely appoint managers who are already in management jobs. As for managers from teams competing in the same league, I think Bruce was the last one. Maybe Durban before him?!.
I do agree with you and I think its more likely to be somebody who isn't even a manager yet (or at least not at senior level).
That said, I dont think this appointment can be compared to any of the past. This is a completely new world for Sunderland
It's a new world alright, but it feels the same old one too. Off the top of my napper I'd guess only Reidy has had more than four years in the last fifty seasons. An amazing stat if I've got it right.
There may of course, - there clearly were - a myriad reasons which do not apply now but which did affect the preceding chaos, and it may well be that there is a serene calm below the surface froth.
But looking from outside, any young coach who already has a record to make him an attractive target would consider this, and might think twice because of that record. Especially as it has occurred under every owner since the Collings. Perception is vital and young coaches need to be careful.
They don't get allowed many failures.
Jack Ross was "taken" from St Mirren as well, so there is recent precedent for us.

It didn't help, but it's been coming for months KLD did not want him as 1st choice.
Then hopefully the replacement will be in situ quick if it's been coming for months?
Just my opinion but getting rid of Mowbray is a really poor decision, and in my opinion a naieve one. I am not going to buy into the conspiracies about player revolts etc. This smacks of a senior team deciding upon a direction of travel for the club, despite all of the evidence to the contrary. Speakman and KLD talk about ambition and a high performance culture. Lets see their ambition now, they need a serious appointment here or they will look stupid. Anything less than playoffs for the new lad will be seen as failure. This could be a massive rod for their own backs. Needs to be someone in work for me, someone with a serious reputation. So far under KLD it has been coaches who are out of work, time to step up their game here in my opinion and back up words of ambition with an elite level coach.
I’m reserving judgment until we see who is appointed and how well they do. We’re still a Championship club, a big one sure. but still in the second tier which will limit who we can attract.
We overachieved last year but those performances coupled with the glimpses we have seen this season will hopefully attract an ambitious coach.
Time will tell but I trust these owners more than any others we have had in a long time.
Agree, Speakman has made a rod for his own back. It didn't have to happen like this, hopefully the next coach will take us to the next level.
They needed a steady appointment when Neil left - the fact Mowbray was unattached was a bonus. A very good appointment given that situation as he proved.
