A big clobber is exactly what he was. I’m sorry what else was he? A master technician pinging 80 yard cross field balls and curling them into the top corner from 30 yards? He was a big clobber, breaking up play (and Sometimes breaking the opponents too) and recovering the ball, that’s what he did and he was very good at it.

We can pretend he was the pioneering Kevin De Bruyne though if it makes you happy.
Now you mention that name
I just heard a rumour….

Ash didn’t even need to be technically good as he wasn’t in the team to ping it around.

He was in the team to lead, tackle and bollock people.

Marney next to him was in the team to run.

Neither would Ken Wagstaff or any past player you care to mention for that matter but no-one is rubbishing him on a 'fans' forum. Especially one who captained this club through all four divisions and came back from a career threatening injury to lead the team out into the PL and our first ever FA Cup Final.

Im not denying his legacy here. I agree he is one of the best midfielders in terms of impact we’ve ever had. Just pointing out that midfielders like Ashbee are a dying breed due to the nature of the game which he himself pointed out at a Q&A I was at.

Also FWIW Ashbee didn’t captain us in the cup final

So you saying a player is either a big clobber or master technician?

As I already said Ash was a master of reading the game and timing a tackle. Yes he'd stick one on the opposition when needed but there was more too his game then that.
I'm sure we've all had that conversation when we've been discussing Hull City....'We need an Ashbee, that's what we're lacking''?

Testament to the man,we've never succeeded in finding one...

I think that’s the confusion , some people are classing footballer as been able to do all those things you’ve mentioned . John Terry and Tony Adams couldn’t do any of those things but many would regard them as great footballers . There are many aspects of been a footballer , Thierry Henry couldn’t smash into 3 players at once like Harry Maguire did . Many like me believe , the way he captained us through the divisions made him an unbelievable footballer for us , some people think to be a footballer you have to be able to dribble past 10 men , each to their own .. anyway , we signed anyone yet?

Yes that’s right, different roles obviously require different attributes. I think the conversation was more geared towards the fact he had made himself such a vital cog in our team, that allowed him to play and compete effectively at a level that was perhaps above his ability, which I think is fair. He wouldn’t have walked into any other team in the championship or premier league at the time and had we signed him in January 2008, without that run in the team in the years preceding and his place in it being firmly cemented I would doubt if he’d ever have captained us at all.

That’s neither being insulting nor disrespectful towards him, quite the opposite.

Ash was a leader, pure and simple, for what he lacked in ability he made up for in his presence, he wouldn't have taken performances like we've seen some players put in, he'd have been in their faces demanding more.

Given how times have changed over the last 15-20 years we’d need more people in HR than we have playing staff if Ash was captain for some of the absolute ****e we’ve seen this season <laugh>

Do we have a sell on percentage after selling Philogene back to Villa?

Apparently so, but 10-15% on profit - so probably around 250k

That’s basing it on £15 million + £3 million (Villas sell on). £20 million to Ipswich - £2 million profit. 200-300k

Im sorry how am I seeing anyone call out the man who lead us through all 4 divisions, should have a statue not a discussion of if he was good or not.

he will retire having played a lot more PL footy than Reggie Slater can assure you… (lol)

There was a discussion about this on the thread , probably at about 4 a.m today

Correct, I think it was decided that it would be better for FFP if we got the sell on next season, so are lobbying Villa to make it a loan with an obligation, which might become an option.
