Neither would Ken Wagstaff or any past player you care to mention for that matter but no-one is rubbishing him on a 'fans' forum. Especially one who captained this club through all four divisions and came back from a career threatening injury to lead the team out into the PL and our first ever FA Cup Final.

Fa cup final? Ashbee?

I don't believe what I read on here sometimes. How can anyone even question the ability of the greatest club captain this club has ever had? Even if he had one leg and played in a blindfold what Ian Ashbee achieved as captain of this club to take us from the old division 4 to the Premier League was truly amazing and will never be repeated. There should be a statue outside the stadium to this man, he is a club legend in every sense of the word. To even question his playing ability is an insult to him and all he stood for.
Well said

I agree with the opening time proposal but Big Vern should be exempt.

We can’t miss out on his wisdom due to the rest of our antics.

It is a bit weird that the club basically never gets to announce signings because it drags on so long that the local press has already moved on from announcing Crooks to analysing his move before the club has even said anything. Takes all the wind from their sails and makes it all a bit redundant. If he genuinely did sign two days ago, not sure what the wait is for?

This Philogene transfer is a bit dodgy. I wonder if Acun got wind of it all along and we’ve lost out on 2/3 million? Hence why Tan Man got the boot?

Not even just 2-3m, we're also losing out on the sell on from Ipswich, where if he does well and ends up going for 30-40m we're missing out on that too.

All that being said, we did earn a tidy profit on him when we otherwise may have only had him in on loan, so can't be too whiny about it.

I’d argue he’s the best captain we ever had and a club legend but still an average footballer.

Apparently, that’s blasphemy and an insult to the man though.
So you have pushed the narrative for several seasons around us needing a defensive midfielder. I can’t believe you have not mentioned his name in vain in supporting this. I’m shocked that you now describe him as an ‘average’ player. I honestly believed your bedroom would be a shrine to the great man.

I don't think we had any control over any part of the situation, certainly not once we'd agreed his purchase with a buy back option. We couldn't turn down villas offer, couldn't avoid the sell on clause and it was purely up to JP where he went, he chose to go back to villa, he's now their player and they can sell him to whoever they want.

All things being equal, his ability was similar to someone like Docherty. His legacy as a club legend is because he captained us from League Two to the Premier League and was a servant of the club for nine years, not because he was a particularly talented player. We hold him in high regard for the same reasons Luton fans hold Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu in such high regard.

I honestly don’t know why some people are struggling with this very basic concept. He is a club legend; I don’t think any City fan would disagree with that. This discussion is about his technical abilities as a player and he was average (again, that is not an insult).

I do. It's the same reason people constantly harp on about wanting us to go back to the old badge, and other nostalgic guff, people look back on 'the old days' as being better times and pine for anything that reminds them of that.

Really? I prefer the old badge because in my opinion it's better, I prefer my midfielders to be technically better (yet again, decent captain average player) than Ashbee was, that's anything but nostalgic. :emoticon-0138-think

I said it's the same reason, not that the same people are consistent about all nostalgic elements.
