Micky Daws made a decent cap’n too. Can’t actually remember who else has been captain, they’ve made that much of an impression.

I don't believe what I read on here sometimes. How can anyone even question the ability of the greatest club captain this club has ever had? Even if he had one leg and played in a blindfold what Ian Ashbee achieved as captain of this club to take us from the old division 4 to the Premier League was truly amazing and will never be repeated. There should be a statue outside the stadium to this man, he is a club legend in every sense of the word. To even question his playing ability is an insult to him and all he stood for.
This^

It’s as if commitment, effort and leadership aren’t classed as playing abilities!

People just can’t see the contradiction in saying , he could organise , he could lead , got stuck in , put his head in , kept it simple but he was a poor footballer . All them qualities are part of a footballer - people mean he couldn’t drop his shoulder and beat a man and score 20 a season .. which is 100% true, but neither can about 75% of most footballers . The debate was never was Ian Ashbee a skillfull player, no he wasn’t - he was a good player though , in his own way . Anyway I can feel my 2007 frustration resurfacing , we signed anyone yet? <laugh>

Because nobody has said he was a poor footballer for ****’s sake.

This Tweet accurately describes this place as well.

Sorry , average player . Point still stands . They list all his good points but then go on to say but he’s average at football , ignoring all the points they’ve just said are good cos they magically don’t count … and believe it or not opinions exist outside this forum , Ashbee has been discussed for years on other online forums and even in real life by humans from time to time, it’s a common contradiction from people

Yeah, and how is that a bad thing? You said yourself 75% of professional footballers can’t do certain things. You basically admit he was average but consider ‘average’ as an insult.

Out of all the professional football players who have ever played in England, or in the world for that matter, Ashbee was average and that’s not an insult.

Yeah, when commenting on one of our players capabilities I always compare them to anyone
whose ever played the game lol.

where have i said he was average? I’m saying you can’t judge a player by just if he can dribble and score worldies, unless you are specifically debating skillfull players , I
Am actually genuinely bored of debating it now , I can’t believe it’s still going on. I just wish we would sign somebody as that’s actual point of this thread <laugh>

I think we all know that the game has got more technical in the last decade or so but there seems to be a real lack of natural leaders now. Whether it's because we've got an influx of foreign players (and I think it's hard to lead if you aren't completely fluent in English) or because academies value different attributes more highly I don't know but it feels like there's a lot less of them now.
