Weekender

This weekend something easy to answer....... maybe.

As we have yet another International break at a time when Leeds Utd have had a great month and don’t look out of place in the Premier league. Maybe its time to ask fans what they think about this squad.? I believe we have a brilliant manager/coach who is right up there with the very best there’s ever been. I include Don Revie in this, and in today’s situation Pep is regarded as the best, yet last week he was out-thought and out-maneuvered, but that’s no surprise to pep as he regards Bielsa as the master.

I look at this squad of mainly mid-table Championship players who are now mixing it with the best in the world and then factor in some top end International players and I believe this is probably the best squad of players we’ve had for many a year.

How does it compare in your eyes to the squads of David O’Leary, Howard Wilkinson and of course the late great Don Revie. Yes different times, different fitness levels, different diets, different psychologies but the ultimate aim is to get a ball into the opposition goals more than they do to you.
I think Don’s squad of players were exceptionally talented, great players one and all and put Leeds on the world’s map, but for what MB has achieved with the players he inherited through sheer coaching ability, it’s hard to argue that he isn’t the best coach we’ve had.

Pablo will also be a week older too. No spring chicken you know <ok>
And then one day you find ten years have got behind you.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.
So you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in a relative way but you're older,
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death.

In all honesty does it really matter, and I mean this generally not specifically to your post LoL. I could argue that Revie and his team of players were consistently at the top of their profession for a period of 10 years, but we were a struggling 2nd division team when Revie took over, so did his coaching skills and preparation hone those players into what they eventually became. The achievements and squads inherited by both Revie and Bielsa for the same period of time are very similar. Only time will tell if the club can continue to replicate and improve on what the club achieved in the mid 60's-70's.

For those of us who were able to watch all or even some of those games played in the Revie era, then we have some absolutely fantastic memories to grow even older with. For those who are watching today, they will also have some fantastic memories in 30/40 years time of the team that Bielsa coached, and subsequent managers improved on.

Trying to compare managers and teams from different era's is just a flight of fancy, the only way you will be able to compare will be based upon what the club are able to achieve over the next 5 to 10 years, and I think we should just enjoy ourselves.

Of course if Bielsa is still here in 10 years time, having won the Premier League 10 times, as well as a few domestic cups and European trophies, I may well be prepared to concede that the Revie era has been matched at last. :emoticon-0140-rofl:
