Seem to remember there was nothing out of the ordinary about them as they came in for training, went to the pub after for a few beers on the way home. They were paid only a few quid per week and had to argue like hell with Manny Cousins for a rise. Most smoked and drank and some even drank a beer at half time. Just lads who were mates
Recently read an interview with Mick Jones who said he was on £35 per week at Sheff Utd and Don Revie doubled it to get him, so £70 pwk, so £3.5kpa, oh and not forgetting his £8 win bonus We have young academy kids like Sam Greenwood and Cody Dramah on £5,000 pwk these days
I guess you've seen the videos, part 1-3 Leeds United Centenary Stories: Don Revie - Our greatest manager On the official site
I think you are right, and I’d struggle to pick a current player better than the Revie equivalent. Though I’d admit when you look back 50 years you forget the bad games they had. what is equivalent is the way the current team plays. Not detail like formation, but the way players would change position, the way the opposition were under constant pressure, the high % possession - I sale from the start that Bielsa reminded me of Revie for the ‘feel’ of the team. Obsessive study of the opposition is another common trait. Revie had his dossiers by player, Bielsa has his binoculars ......
Morning weekenders bloody breaks bore me to death. First up for me today is flu jabs. If i get the trainee like last year my arm will hurt for days. She kept pushing even when it touched my bone. You get a 3 minute slot each person it will be like darts.
Whilst I appreciate that it's not comparable to today, given that average income was under £900 per year, in 1967 when Jones joined us, he was earning in a week, what most earned in a month, so was an excellent wage for its time, especially when you consider that a clubs main income was gate receipts. My dad and Gary Speed's dad worked together and Gary played in same local team as myself despite being 3 years younger than me. I had been working for 3 maybe 4 years for a high st bank when he signed his first professional contract and he got paid in 2 months more than I earned in a year
Last weekend was superb. Ok it's only watching on the TV but our game against City plus the scum and Pool debacles were as entertaining as it gets on a sporting front. This weekend it's international matches....
Been there and done that last Saturday. Flu jab arm ache not so bad but had the pneumococal jab on Tuesday and that is still rather tender.
Come to think of it Incant ever remember a game when we were not going for it. So a game when we were just parking the bus to try and get a point or protect a lead, or have my rose tinted glasses clouded? I remember the Astles match for instance and how we were cheated again.....
yeh revies team would have 4 men sent off after 10 minutes under today’s rules. bielsa’s 4 men Carried off under 70’s rules.
They were so good they rarely parked a bus. What they would do is play with the ball to keep a lead. Best memory of that was at OT, we won 0-1 and crowd were screaming at the scum players to get the ball back
