Rosie managed to accumulate 16 points in his last 13 games with a team valued at anywhere from £75 to £100 million - so far Walter has managed 3 our of 15 with a team costing a fraction of 'Rosie's team' - whether or not Walter is cut out to be our manager in the longer term remains to be seen, at least until the team have had chance to prove themselves - but seriously lets not pretend that Rosie was the answer - yes, really nice genuine guy, but way off the pace managing a football team
Walter may well be the wrong guy for the job but to pretend like Rosenior was somehow miles better is just revisionism. Barring Sheffield United (who weren’t in this division last season), Rosenior only managed to beat Millwall once at home out of the teams we’ve played this season. Drew against Millwall away, drew at home and lost away to Bristol City, drew at home and lost away to Plymouth and drew at home and lost away to Leeds.
Anyone remember De Boer at Palace? They dropped him after 7 games which everyone thought was a mad call but they then stayed up comfortably. Sometimes it's just quite apparent quite quickly that a manager isn't up for it. Many of us called it before Shota even came in but he did nothing to improve things, Slutsky was gone after half a season, and Walter looks more incompetent than either of them.
Can I ask in how many of the pictures you posted were the corners taken short and then played back to the deepest man, meaning that if he was pressed and lost possession it was a free shot at goal?
And still had us 7th! Incredible to think how thin the margins were that if all he had to do was turn some of those results into wins we would have been comfortably top 6. I don't know why there's these constant references to our January as if he somehow failed massively with them, taking us from the dizzying heights of 6th all the way down to 7th while other sides also improved and we missed key cogs like Delap, Philogene and Seri in the run in.
I just can't quite fathom the cognitive dissonance it takes to say 'Give Walter time to gel a new squad' and 'Rosenior was given 5 new starting XI players in January and wasn't able to throw them into a play off chasing team and get them to click instantly the **** him'. Like if one is a valid criticism so is the other. Add in the fact Walter actually had a pre-season with a chunk of his squad and wasn't just getting them up to speed as he went. Also ignoring the fact that Carvalho, one of said additions, was one of our most prolific players for the season so didn't exactly 'fail'. In fact of the additions only Zaroury proved a disappointment, even Ohio chipped in with goals.
Agreed. It’s largely a product of the human tendency for rosy retrospection (yes pun intended), with a few other side cars in travel too. And whilst I liked Rosenior and do think he might have improved as a manager had he stayed, this constant refrain and yearning to his former tenure seems pointless and hollow now. He was sacked – happens all the time. Football is transient – apart from the clubs and the fans* *in theory.
Tim was right, last night was a good performance based on the style he wants to play. I've no idea what game people were watching but I saw us play decent football at the back, expose the Sheffield Utd holes when they pressed and conceded two goals from individual errors. First a mistake and secondly Millar behaving like a little girl when chasing a ball instead of putting his body on the line. Following the second goal we had a number of chances that should have led to at least one goal back. From a technical point of view the performance was very good until we got to the final third and that area needs some work. But to suggest we were terrible makes me wonder what people were watching. Tim is bang on with his assessment. It was a good performance and we didn't execute well enough. You can argue all day about not having a striker but it wasn't the striker that was causing us to break down.
Rosenior at least made a solid team, that didn’t part like the Red Sea every time the enemy launched an offensive against it. I don’t see what Rosenior has to do with Walter being clearly incompetent of organising a football team into a cohesive unit.
People look back on Rosenior because the constant "Well Walter hasn't gotten points against teams Rosenior didn't so it's fine" line is trotted out. People look back on Rosenior as it's a direct example of "Was this decision to appoint Walter the right one" so the decision to stick or twist with Rosenior inevitably comes up. People look back on Rosenior because the entire strategy of the summer is under scrutiny and his departure was the first step in it. It doesn't mean people are stuck in the past or pining for something they can't get back, it means they aren't just sweeping things under the carpet and saying "Well it's done now, move on".
I said that because several other people keep saying Rosenior would’ve had more points after the first five games with this squad when last season he struggled against these teams with a stronger squad.
Sorry I didn't mean specifically you, there's been a lot of people who have tried to line up the results from last season to this. I think Rosenior definitely would have though as, for instance, Millwall are significantly weaker this season. There's so much context and circumstance that looking at things as simply as that almost never works.
totally agree, this is the third time in a row Acun has employed a manager with no previous experience of managing a team in The Championship. He got it totally wrong with Shota (lovely guy, way out of his depth), took a chance with Rosenior(assistant to Rooney at Derby) & now goes for someone who may talk the talk but has actually had no success in Germany with his "unique" style of football. Papa Allam was totally clueless about football but he listened to the person who advised him to hire Bruce Who is advising Acun ? Since Bruce left City have had 7 managers (Phelan,Slutsky,Silva,McCann,Shota, Rosenior,Walter) & all we have to show for it is 2 relegations (Silva,McCann) & 1 promotion(McCann) We need stability & with Acun picking managers I'm not sure if we'll ever get it ?
Maybe that's part of the frustration people have with Rosenior's sacking, is not just the style of play being good v bad, but the fact that we progressed from bottom half to 7th and seemed on a steady trajectory with perceived long term stability and then we voluntarily ripped it all up. It felt like self-sabotage.
I don’t think Millwall are that much weaker tbh. Other than Flemming, the Millwall side we played this season was pretty much the same as the one we played last season. And in both games against Millwall last season, Philogene was pretty much the deciding factor for us getting points. In the away game he scored and assisted Traoré and in the home game he scored. Philogene’s impact can’t be overstated enough last season. He didn’t just score and assist; he scored and assisted deciding goals that turned losses into draws or draws into wins. He carried us for large parts of last season.
In the home game he scored a tap in after Zaroury smashed the bar. In that first 10-15 mins Giles and Zaroury were tearing it up on the left flank and we thought we'd struck gold and were going to walk the league with how the new boys were settling in then they all just went into their shells.
Can I also just bring up not just the short corners but the short everything? It was like we were determined to rule out any perceived advantage of any set piece of any kind by playing it short as just another pass. Every FK from an offside, even the majority of FKs in attacking positions (apart from one Omur hit dead centre) we just played short to get the ball moving again which inevitably ended up back at the keeper. So even if you wanted to argue that we passed it around a lot until we got into attacking positions from which we could deploy a set play, we didn't even have any set plays at our disposal? It just begs the question of what actually goes on in training? Is it just the back four passing between themselves and the rest of the team sitting it out?
You're entitled to an opinion but unless you're prepared to post your qualifications and experience like I have in the past I make no apology for not giving a ****e about it.
