Match Day Thread vs Hoffenheim (A)

But then you give the advantage to the opposition imo, because you're allowing them to choose who and where to attack. Providing the delivery is good enough.

Down to opinion I suppose but I disagree just attack your area and you'll win the ball, better than tussling with some 6ft monster.

The problem is that the ball crosses different zones on its way. Whose responsbility is it to intercept it? When you have three 6 foot 5 and 15 stone players running towards it, it can be quite difficult for our static defenders <whistle>

Look the laws have now been interpreted that you can pull and drag all you want.

I saw west ham defending v utd. Nothi g but pens all day last year.

Lfc have to wise the **** up and block. Pull drag.. foul.. all the way.

If guys cant get a run they wont score

Point being they're not supposed to be static, you attack the ball in your zone or if you think it may end up in your zone. It's the same principal as man marking but without getting into a tussle with an opponent.

I think you are right in theory but in practice ( I see many teams doing this now ) you could have 4 tall players standing and starting together on a space of 1 square metre and getting the corner taker to aim the ball at them. If its zonal, the poor guy with the responsibility for that zone, has to take on not one but 4 of these monsters. So it is 1 v/s 4 instead of 4 v/s 4 in man to man marking.

Imo there are only 3 zones for zonal.

6 yard area front. Six yard area middle. Back stick area.

Simple. We put wijnaldum on front area... lunacy.

We didnt turst the two cbs in thier zones nor can and stuck firmino middle of 6 yard zone... wtf..

My plan would be thus.

1. Front zone. Can. Attack ball.

2. Middle zone. Matip. Tallest player.

3. back zone lovren. Not great but usually hard to score there.

4. Blockers. Pulling and dragging at pen spot. Henderson. Firmino. Milner.

5. Near corner taker.. wijnaldum.

6. Edge of box shot blockers/ salah and mane. Ready to break forward.

7. Clyne. Gk blocker

8. Hanging round looking for the ball. Coutinho.

As long as it's done right then the defenders are running unhindered onto a ball so it gives you the advantage, it works imo and I love it. Hated having to teach it as the players are negative at the start but once they get it I've never known a player not like it. Man to Man only works if you have big strong defenders that will win every ball in the air.

Don't like the blockers idea which seems to be in with mixed zonal marking it means that there are static players again instead of them attacking the zone.

You are right though in that one of the ways to counter zonal is to get players to attack a zone en masse, delivery has to be very good then though.

I always used 6, the three you mentioned and 3 inbetween that would go out further into the area to attack deeper crosses. All 6 start in the 6 yard box 3 attacking the deepest then move first followed by the other 3. Any other defenders had a static position.
So why are we so useless at it?
Top 4 in one the most difficult leagues in the world and we can't master a simple defensive system?

Good point. I would add that we have a goalkeeper who allows himself to be bullied. Could you see Reina letting an opposition player block him like Mignolet did on Saturday?

It really is mind numbing, that first goal at Watford, eveyone just stands still. I really don't understand how that is acceptable in any system man to man or zonal? I'd be losing my mind seeing that if I'm Klopp.

To add to that. The system I coached meant that everyone (6 players) started in or around the 6 yard box 3 on the line. Against Watford the problem seemed to be that the ball was delivered into the 6 yard box. so in my system 3 would have already left that area 1 of the others would attack the near post zone the other 2 are looking to deal with the ball into their zone and don't have much of a run at the ball.

Shouldn't matter 6 yard ball near post or central is keepers.

We have Mingolet. <doh>

He had a bad game on Saturday, but he wasn't alone. He was a lot better last season so hopefully that was a slip rather than a slide back.
He's not aggressive enough, or confident enough though.

I agree. I noticed several times last season opposition blocking him out and he just allowed it. It seems to be a new tactic against us. A swift push would sort that or calling the refs attention.

Man to man, all that needs to happen is Okaka outmuscled Lovren like he did all game and he suddenly has a free header anyway.

Everyone bleats on about zonal and love to point out when someone scored scored a goal from a zonal marking but never go on about the fact that most teams mark man to man and fail to deal set pieces just as much.

How many times have we seen a man completely lose his marker and leave a free header?

both can work well, both can work badly. It's about organisation and personnel though. If you have players who know to do it then either way works. If you've got bunch of players that can't man mark then it's no good playing a man marking system, saw last year pogba fail miserably against us, until he was told you stand in that zone and attack it if it comes near you and he suddenly looked capable again.
