Attacking options - this is exactly why we needed Gray, We can now pick 3 from 5 rather than 3 from 4, plus he'll add the pace up top that we were lacking. An excellent loan signing.

Hopefully, I'm really not sure about this one.

Ive seen enough of Field to know hes a very good footballer, even more so at this level. Hes a distant relative of mine (3rd cousin) or something like that. He is a presence, being a big lad and complements Johanson very well. If fit then i imagine that they would be the choice pairing. As for Gray, its all about options. Austin and Dykes both like to drop slightly deeper and neither are pacey to latch on to any through balls. Gray could play with either. Chair and Willock wont be able to play every game this season (although Barbet manages it). Its a very shrewd bit of business if you ask me. Any defender will tell you that pace is the hardest thing to mark.

Great post Bob. I'd not considered the Chair / Willock factor. I suppose you're right and having a more pacey striker to partner Austin/Dykes might give us a chance to rest one of Chair/Willock when needed.

Tweet posted on LFW thread suggests that Gray is negotiating termination of contract at Watford and will join as a free transfer.....

Didn't see that coming....

I like the fact that Warburton has a history with Gray. He's a motivator, and since Gray has been underperforming, Gray will surely be anxious to get back the form he showed when under Warburton's guidance. Like you, I'm optimistic if this renewed relationship comes about. It's a long season and if we're serious about challenging, we need this kind of depth to the squad.

It's been reported that Gray has completed his medical with us, and is now agreeing a termination at Watford before joining us as a free transfer. Correct or not, I dont know.

Year left on contract worth circa 3.5m.... settle for 2m and then 10k a week, not a lot of difference in scheme of things....

Yep, this. Football finance is a funny thing but I understand from The Price Of Football podcast (which is excellent) that clubs will often pay their 'flops' off in exactly the way Tramore describes. In effect the footballers can end up getting double pay - making Gray affordable for us.

I'll wait for the confirmation but if that goes through, it'll put the rest of the league on notice.

In the U23 game now, the commentators just mentioned that one of the club owners is watching with Lee Hoos at the stadium. And they wouldn't normally be there at an U23 game, which may be telling us something about deadline day. The commentators seemed to be hinting at something.
