If Roberts stays good. If he goes so be it. I think Speakman has proved his worth to the club. We have a structure. Dont break it it. Certainly appears to be working. Glad were not letting agents hold us to ransom.

We've tried bringing/keeping players with bribery ... it never worked.

Surely creating an environment, with top class facilities, where players are well looked after, receive good coaching/medical care and play for big appreciative crowds is better. Players like Amad have obviously enjoyed their time here and are now encouraging other good players to come to Sunderland ...

... money doesn't always create the desire needed to push the team forward, there has to be more to it otherwise football is truly lost.

I think we are at risk of conflating two things here though? One is that we shouldn’t give in to ridiculous wage demands and I completely agree with that. The other is that we are “allegedly” offering a key first team player the same wages he signed when he joined us.

I really don’t think it’s unreasonable for him to expect or want a pay increase. If he wants us to match what Southampton are offering then cheerio and good luck thanks Patrick. But I just don’t think it’s sensible from a sentiment perspective to offer somebody the same salary they’re already on, if you’re trying to tell them you want to keep them.

All of this is completely based off that story and there will be all sorts of nuance to consider.

And that's the reason we shouldn't build entire arguments about the way the club is being run.

But people take unsubstantiated gossip and run with it, other's quote it then, before you know, it's an internet fact and another reason to knock the club ...

... it's fkn pathetic tbh.

A fishpaste story?

Would "probable bollocks" be one of the nuances.

I hear ya but he'll be like the first professional footballer ever to do that for a club he's been at for 18 months like :D

All the things you listed are great but you also need to feel valued by your club. And saying "we want to keep you but can't pay you any more" doesn't scream like you're valued. Like I said I'd find it more insulting than no offer at all.

So I hope the devil is in the detail and actually the terms are better than suggested - for example same salary but increased bonuses. Even then its a risky kick in the teeth from a negotiation standpoint when we know he would get better elsewhere.
he also needs to look at those new boys coming in and I ' m sure he has but your right he needs to feel valued which I should have include in the post.

Why am I seeing the same people who went into meltdown on deadline day now doing the exact same thing again?

Someone can correct me if I’m wrong but Prehab said the reason the new deal wasn’t done a few weeks back was contract length, nothing to do with wages.

At no point in the article does it mention that contract add ons like goal bonuses or a promotion clauses aren’t being offered it just mentions the base wage not being increased.

Multiple first team players have signed new deals this year, did we just offer them the exact same terms as their previous deal?

So so so sick of parts of this fanbase. I’m getting to the point where I can’t look on social media because of the constant negative spin and I dread going to the match because of the abuse people give the players, even when we win. The club is in a great place but the fanbase has never been worse.
I was at the match against Southampton and we were 2-0 up within minutes and there was a 20 something kid behind me slating the players for not doing what he thought they should. I mean Dan Neil who he was shouting about saying not good enough, Patterson got it for his positioning, Ekwah was not good enough or quick enough. I turned around and told him in front if his mates that he had paid good money to support his team today maybe he should try that first and shut the **** up. His mates gave me a round of applause and then started winding the twisty little twat up. To be fair to him he got the point and became a lot more positive after that !!

Good for you mate.

It's very easy to moan which is why the dimwitted take that course ...

... we all have a responsibility to those around us and 'support' should come first.

Discussing the game afterwards is the right time to moan, it never helps during a game.

The problem is that you are believing a Fishpaste story that is nothing but conjecture. He may have gotten a few things right but also got a few things wrong. He loves to stir the **** pot with a big stick and does it to serve his clicks not for the club or for the fans and this should not be overlooked.
I have very little knowledge of what goes on at the club but can use common sense and read a situation like most people and said I believed that contracts would be sorted after window as it is when many clubs start to organise once finances become clearer.
My gut feeling is that the club are offering a contract of the right length first and foremost the value will then be negotiated as in "OK Patrick we are looking at a three year with a 1 year extension is that something that you would be looking for ??? No mention of money just contract length, if that was deemed a good length then the money/bonuses will be discussed. That's my guess on the situation but Fishpaste would not report a headline like PATRICK ROBERTS AGREES DEAL IN PRINCIPAL WITH SUNDERLAND JUST WAITING ON CERTAIN DETAILS TO BE IRONED OUT.

Me blindly believing Fishpaste hasn’t made the story up is as “bad” as people blindly believing he has.

Same in the East Stand where even before the kick off some dimwit was shouting the odds about selling all the best players and signing loads of foreign kids nobody has heard of , he must have seen the looks and heard the derisory grumbles from surrounding supporters and shut up rather quickly -THANK GOD

**** when did that happen :emoticon-0140-rofl: some people love to slag the club though.

Only player who went who would have been 1st team was Ross Stewart, who didn't want to be here.

It's not about believing or not believing I think it's more about the context of what he says and how he can manipulate a story to make it either positive or negative with a little bit of spin. It's our interpretation of what he says as in he can make the club look bad or good depending on how he phrases his story

Couldn’t give a shiny ****e if Roberts goes if I’m honest he’s overrated massively by our fans. Decent player at this level but that’s it, he’ll never do much in the prem and he wanted away this summer. We should’ve took the money and ran.

Mentioned numerous times before he’s nearly 27 and last season was his first real stand out season, 5 goals he’d scored in the 4 years previous at numerous different clubs where he was a bit part player. Players with a bit about them are performing in the championship well before the age he’s at.

Going to have to disagree here like he isn't massively over rated he's an absolutely unbelievable talent at this level. You find a winger in the league with that technique, skill, touch, dribbling ability at speed that is anywhere near as good as he is then I'd agree. Finally settled here and is thriving.

The current regime have proven time and time again that they know what they’re doing. They’re smart and competent and exercise good judgment. You’d think it would have earned them some goodwill by now and people would give them the benefit of the doubt.

Instead a load of our supporters would rather put stock in a throwaway, speculative piece from a questionable journalist. I suspect they do so as it confirms their bias and supports their agenda. They either have an inherent distrust of the club and an adversarial relationship with the hierarchy that they just can’t shake or they pissed and moaned so loudly and with such conviction previously against KLD and Speakman et al that now being proven right is more important to them than anything else. They latch on to any negativity they can and then just disappear when times are good.
