That's just a positive spin on it. Telling our pots that no contracts will be on offer is literally ditching him. Sort of a political answer from Michael.

As opposed to the negative spin on it? The club seems to be treating players well under the current regime and doing the right thing by them. Look at Jordan Willis for example.

In the case of Batth and Gooch etc, they're being told that we want to keep them for now, but that long term they may be able to get better offers elsewhere. If I was in their shoes I'd appreciate candour.

In some people's eyes, the club can't do anything right.

Sounds fair enough, unfortunately. Yes he is the POTS last year and yes we would like him to be the POTS next year as well. Sentiment needs to be put to one side though and offering Batth a contract up to 2025 could be viewed as irresponsible, given his age and salary.

I’m aware this is probably an unpopular view.

Fair points but I think it's a massive risk to let him move on now. We have recruited early but they are unproven , with zero experience in this league.

Just think it's an unnecessary risk mate.
I do agree with that mate, the club obviously aren't going to give him a new contract next year. I would have thought the sensible thing would be not say anything, keep him, use him as experience to bring young lads on as well as playing his part.
So they've either told him to be honest and fair to him so if he can find a longer deal elsewhere they won't stand in his way, or is it that they don't think he will play much this season so it's better he goes now as at least we'll get some kind of transfer fee

I am purely speaking from a performance and risk mitigation approach mate. DB held our defence together in desperate times last year. We appear to be rolling the dice significantly.

Not wanting to be too contrary here, but you're not. I get this argument here - it is a risk in some respects from a footballing point if view, but your other posts suggest we're 'ditching' him. I'm not sure that's the case tbh.

With one year left when would discussions on a contract renewal start? Probably very soon, at which point you either either string them along and then ‘change our minds’ or just be honest and say nothing going to happen. Or, be really up front about it and give the players as much notice as possible. Everyone knows the score and no-one is unsettled, players have plenty of notice to start planning their next move. Option to move on a free at end of contract and hopefully get a good signing on fee, or move earlier with promise of a longer contract for more security. Think Speakman is trying to do the right thing here for the players, keep the trust in the squad, set the tone in having honest and open conversations.

Yeah, I suppose. But I think he only has an extra year on Simms’ contract.

Simms was set to be released in 2024, Cannon in 2025.
It makes all the difference though mate. A player’s value drops off a cliff edge normally when they enter the final year of their contract.

That sort of treatment of players will go a long way to aid in recruitment going forward. Looking after our players’ interests is not a bad reputation to have.

I’m not sure it’s necessarily that the club can’t do any right in some people’s eyes, I think it’s more that Speakman can’t. Some people just can’t get over their dislike for him.

If he was being ditched, they wouldn't have triggered his year extension. Batth can see out this year and leave on a free, and he is very likely to find a contract after that, especially as the "buying" club would have no transfer fee to pay. His choice now.

I don't see the club as having done anything wrong here, in fact they have put the player first and have been upfront and honest imo.

Anyway, no point arguing about it. Everything can be spun negatively or positively. Depends on your mindset I guess

This 100 % imo

As things stand I'd say the club has really earned my trust.

Whichever players we retain, sell or bring in I'll go along with it.

This is the easiest transfer window I've ever known.

I'm certainly not going to question the club if they believe the best thing to do is allow Batth to leave ....

... almost everyone questioned the club when he came in tbh, myself included.

I was wrong, so was everyone else.

On the field they have certainly earned our trust, although I'd like to see the RS situation / another striker situation sorted before the start of the season. Feels like we are stuck in limbo not moving forward or backwards with that.

Off the field annoys the hell out of me, due to how important the turnover is to help the on the field matters.

Fair enough. That's what he is paid to do. From my view though it's incredibly risky to move on our best defender from last year and one that held it together for us.
