Because we haven't sold anyone. Nobody, not even the parachute payment clubs, is spending decent money without receiving any first.

The only clubs spending money are the ones who have received big transfer fees over the last 3 windows or so.

Our lack of selling players is holding us back.

I understand what you're saying and agree that selling and re-investing is the way forward generally.

In this case however, the suggestion is that we should go for Mendy (rumoured to be agreed) and Vipotnik (free transfer).

I realise that no transfer is free and there'll be a signing on fee plus additional wages, but I don't think a big sale is needed to get those 2 over the line.

While a player may be free there is often a fairly decent signing on fee so the ‘free’ but is always a bit misleading to me. Just means more going cash to player/agent than to the club.

Are they game changers though? They look alright but they aren't better than a Stansfield or someone like Haji Wright who Coventry bought after selling players.

I honestly don't think we'll get Mendy either, we had a bid of around £1m rejected, I don't think we have the current funds to go much higher and I don't think we should either for a 30 y/o.

I think we do have the funds, but not for a player who has no resale value

It's hard to say if they're "game changers" but added to our existing game changers, they could be enough to take us over the top.

Haji Wright is excellent, but Coventry finished lower last season after spending that money.

Stansfield got 12 goals in the Championship last season. I'd say there's a chance that Vipotnik and Mendy would better that (I also think Stansfield would this season to be fair).

100%. I remember the L1 years where Livepool released some young left back on the understanding he would come here. We then did a u-turn when Cirkin became available and signed him instead. If the club have identified a better player then they are well within their rights to sack Mendy off. We're not a charity...

Quite right. We might have intended to go for Mendy, but then Bordeaux went under and we're trying for Zipotnik. Either that or we've been notified of someone else's availability, who we see as a better fit.

But we haven’t spent fortunes, we have continued to sell gazillions of season tickets and the commercial deals are far better.

Not suggesting we go daft and spend 10’s of millions but we must have a few quid we can spend. We are way under on wages and fees.

I agree a big sale benefits but I doubt it’s essential.

Yeah I agree. Don't think we will or should spend much on Mendy. My thoughts are that we seen Caen in money trouble and thought we could grab him for cheap, which I can get behind, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

The fact he posted on instagram in France last night proved Roker Reports info was incorrect.

That wouldn't get you a good player though. We need to sell or we will get left behind, it's already happening. We need to get into that next bracket of signing, like Coventry have done. Until we do that we have to shop in the unproven market because we don't have the money to get these better talents everyone wants.
Totally agree with this. Need a big sale to enable us to move up a level of player.

We are way under on wages and fees because everyone else sells players and uses that money to increase their transfer fees and wage bills. Season ticket sales and commercial deals help but barely scratch the surface.

It's essential we sell big to push on, failing to do so will be to our detriment in the transfer market.

Not sure myself. I like the look of Mendy but not sure he would take us from 16th to promotion.

I put Coventrys drop off down to Simms having a dreadful start to the season but I do think they'll be up there this season.

Didn’t vilotnik turn us down last year? Might make sense if they revisit it now, just hope we have one ready for the season starting

I'd be absolutely gutted if Hume leaves.

Me too, he's a very good player who just keeps improving ...

... plus he's clearly well liked by the other players and seems good for morale.

He's not there quite yet but I could see him becoming a 'cult figure' before long.

However, if I had to choose between selling him, Clarke or Ballard I'd struggle tbh.

The club need to sell someone, imo, but I'm glad I'm not making that decision.
