The key is getting value. If we signed Ozil and Babbel on stupid money than as long as that turned into results, promotion and even greater revenue than thats fine.
I see your point though. Its risk vs reward and MM put the club in a position of Premier league or bust. We need to avoid doing the same, but just because someone costs money doesn't mean we shouldn't sign them - just means we have to be more or less certain of a return on the outlay.
That return could be split between increased attendence, league position/prize money, TV revenue, image rights, resale value ect but we need to ensure a return on our investments in players.
Obviously signing a big name on massive wages with no resale value and who is perhaps less motivated after playing a higher level and is on his way down the ladder is much more of a risk. But again, just because someone comes with a price tag then it doesn't mean we should dismiss the prospect out of hand if the 'probable' as opposed to 'potential' return is likely to be greater.
