The club explicitly announcing their intention to negotiate with Geertuida is a first from my memory.

Had a look at all the details I could find on his Leipzig contract, which runs to 2029 with a basic wage in the £75000-90000 range, in all honesty it looks less than likely but it all hinges on the player, if the player wants to come and is willing to forgo a little bit of financial benefit to play for us, he'll come.

He signed a 4 year deal the season before here came here, the agreed fee is approx £20m, you'd presume if he signs for that sort of fee we will want him on a 4 or 5 year deal, taking us to 2030 or 2031 which will take the player to age 30 or 31 (birthday in July). Players typically like to renew at 29 in order to get a final big deal. Fingers crossed but don't count your chickens is my verdict.

I don't follow European football a lot so didn't know about Geertruida before coming to us.

His stats at Leipzig weren't anything to write home about so I checked them for 23/24 at Feyenoord. They are excellent with the great majority of his time playing at right back. We've seen the quality he has. 18 Eredivisie games were as captain, by the way.

Digging into his Geertuida's time at Leipzig in 24/25, he played 19 times at centre back, 14 times at right back and 5 games split between left back/right midfield. Goes part of the way to explain why his stats dropped off so much. 1 goal and no assists in 24 Bundesliga games.

I know it's easy to get a bit carried away as we as a club are on cloud 9 at the moment, I just hope we still stay true to who we are and keep our feet firmly planted in the way we have over tha last few years.
This build and this success has been achieved with shrewd purchases and a lot of hard work both on and off the pitch and my worry is that the team may start to expect results rather than working for them (don't think Xhaka will allow that) and every time we seem to be confident we seem to get a reality check.
Yes we need to strengthen in certain areas and yes we need to upgrade in a couple of areas, but I think having the right personalities is as important as having players with ability but I also think we proved that last season.

Surprised to see KLD linked away again. Don't see it. His investment strategy has always felt long term to me and the likes of Xhaka seems to have bought into a medium term project at very least.
If someone was advising him on a financial basis, now would be the time to sell considering what we were bought for and our current value going into a Europa League campaign, as a Sunderland supporter though, I hope he feels like there's even more to come because it feels like this ride has just got going.

It always felt like he was doing it as a career rather than as an investment to me. Not to say he won't sell at some point but he's achieving notoriety as an investor as well as financial return and that's probably worth a whole lot to a young billionaire looking to make a life for himself beyond his family's billions.

Maybe I've become a bit cynical but considering his background, I find it hard to believe that finances weren't imperative to the whole operation, that isn't to say he hasn't been swept up in it all though.

When he spoke to Xhaka a year ago,he obviously sold him a project, which must have been for a medium term time pattern. Xhaka said,on the pitch after the Chelsea match, this was only the beginning. I don't think there's any evidence to suggest KLD would be thinking of selling up.

Fair comment, it would feel like pulling the rug if he sold and left this summer.
