The investment required is limited to what the club can afford. This is the nature of SCR. It is how the club is run as much as how much is piled in that counts.


KLD seems to me pretty commited, and the effort he put into attracting Xhaka particularly and the players subsequent remarks do suggest a long term involvement.

But these people live in a rarefied world, and you never really know. Being able to multiply your investment by up to eight or even ten times, is a chance even a rich man might not be able to resist.

I'd guess he is around for a good while yet. But I wouldn't be staggered if that wasn't the case, though I would be disappointed.

I’d like to think that Charles and Kelly would be in our thinking for additional squad depth. Both lads look good players and it won’t hurt having Ballard and Hume here if we were interested in them. I see Charles is linked with United so we’ll have competition but we are an attractive proposition in our own right these days.

Charles cost Southampton 15m. They’d probably want 25m plus. Can’t see us paying that for depth.

I would like Charles, don't think his fee is out of the question for what he offers as good depth behind xhaka, as a CB and further forward as an 8. Would certainly play plenty imo.

Kelly I don't think is near the level required but he did score yesterday - not sure that's representative of his usual standard.

Hmmm, I’m sure they will want an uplift, not sure that they get that for him unless United really want him. Much will depend on what the collective player position is at Southampton in the fallout from the playoff fiasco.
We’ll see.

Fair re Charles and as @Late goal Scorer mentioned, much will depend on how much Southampton are prepared to accept for him, particularly if United are keen to land him.

A mate of mine watches Kelly regularly and really rates him, moreso than me as from the bits of him I’ve seen of him he looks steady but with time on his side to improve.

In both of these lads cases I’m constantly needing to remind myself that less than a year ago I fully expected Hume and Ballard to be bench level at best at PL and look how that turned out for us.

At the time of his contract discussions I DMd someone, explained the situation and exactly what the outcome would be.
This person confirmed that I gave him the information long before details were released about him leaving.
So nothing to do with hindsight, just the one and only bit of information I have ever had, and probably will ever have.

I don't think the fee they want will be too excessive no more than 20-25m and am not convinced of there being any real interest from Manchester United considering their other targets and players at the club already.

I would say regarding Kelly there are definitely some promising signs but he's a year or two away from being a consideration for me, maybe get a championship move first and see how he adjusts because he isn't especially dominant in league one.

Weird one that, been at Salzburg but Leverkusen have just activated a buy back on him and he’s returning to them next month. Seems like they’re just doing it to make a profit if he’s been linked with moves to us and Roma, though.

I do think us qualifying for Europe and him being called up to the Dutch squad makes it likely he could sign permanently. Always looks happy in and around the club too, don’t take that for granted.
