James Smailes taking a pop at Lichaj...
Out of contract at the end of this month, the hope was Lichaj would agree a short-term deal to allow him to feature for the remaining nine games as City scrap for their Championship lives.
Lichaj saw it differently, again, as is his right. But should we expect more from the captain, from a leader of a side in such a precarious position? I think so, others will no doubt disagree.
It’s a decision which is difficult to swallow. Lichaj must protect himself and his best interests, that’s the argument to be made and it’s true football is a cut-throat business that chews up and spits out players at an alarming rate.
It doesn’t make this decision any more palatable. If City were mid-table with nothing to play for Lichaj’s decision would bring with it less anger or resentment from some supporters. Perhaps the mistake was to hope for more.
Taking to social media last night Lichaj said: “It has been a pleasure and honour to play for Hull City. Thank you for making me and my family feel welcome. All the best to the boys for the rest of the season.”
For many the words were hollow.
It seems O Captain! My ex-Captain! would be more fitting.
Perhaps Abraham Lincoln summed it up best himself in his most famous speech in Gettysburg. To quote another of Lichaj’s countrymen, Lincoln famously said: “The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here.”
Lichaj’s decision will sour for many the time spent at the club of a likeable family man for which nobody wishes ill. The hope is he goes on to have success elsewhere, but the timing of this exit still doesn’t sit well.
Rightly or wrongly, more is expected of a club captain.
