I know, it's embarrassing isn't it. We got 15million for a midfielder in league one. Strikers are more expensive and we are a top half premier league side now, 5million wouldn't come close.

Well, yeah, but Chamberlain had spent the entire season tearing it up and broadcasting his ridiculous ability. Gallagher has had a couple of decent sub appearances. He'd not exactly command a high fee if we wanted to sell him (which, you know, we don't).

I think that any youngster with sense can see where they are better off. The plan is to give them a clear route to the first team and they can see it in action with the likes of Shaw, JWP, Chambers, and Gallagher. Rarely happens in the top sides...even lower sides seem to favour experienced players if they are fighting to stay in the league. At Saints, they will be well looked after, will end up playing next to lads they have known for years, and will play for an exciting footballing side. Our lads are brought up with their heads screwed on.

Haha I think we might be getting a little ahead of ourselves with Gallagher here. How many games has he played with the first team? I know we have a good academy but it's not like they're all worth in the tens of millions by default!

I agree, but the point is why would we bother to sell an 18yo for 5 million? For a prem team 5million is nothing, we're better off waiting and seeing how he develops, which is exactly what I think we will do.

In actual fact at the moment he is worth less than Billy Sharp, as he has proven nothing yet. But for us to accept a 5million offer for him would be ridiculous.

That's what I meant when I said he would sell for peanuts....far less than he could be worth. Yes, not every player goes on progressing to become a great player, but I bet we think he'll be worth more than 5 million in the future and cost a lot more to replace (even if he remains a back up player to us). If we sell anyone (and hoping we don't) it will be someone who commands silly money now.

Sam is in our first team and looking promising...don't think we will be in a hurry to sell him when he can only command peanuts at the moment. How much would we have to pay for a replacement...we may have promising players in the Academy, but this is a young lad who has just made it to the first team. What message would that give the younger players?

I agree! I really don't understand this attitude for selling any of our young players for any price!? They've grown up together and they want to play for each other. This sort if commitment to the club you can't buy!

This is what worries me most about the summer if we consider selling shaw. I don't care how much they offer if they want to stay they stay end of!

Andy Robinson has gone to Bolton. Looks like we are having a youth clesr out.

We are always going to produce more players than we can use...though we minimise this by not taking on as many as clubs like Chelsea. Or perhaps there has been a change of policy and they are trying to see if a few games elsewhere may help bring them on. However, I don't see this happening with the best players who will continue to be fast tracked.

His contract is up end of season. So he won't be back.

Just looked on Newsnow and basically all our players are leaving in the summer. Suppose we should take it as a compliment!

I'm going to put myself on the list.

"Overweight, happy clapper supporter for sale; guaranteed to purchase new kit, no matter how **** is is. Starting bid: 1 pie"

Firstly a disclaimer: I have no idea of our finances and for all I know we have millions in the directors' biscuit tin and hopefully keep all our best players. I think (note: think) that it is possible that we may do some strategic selling just like most teams end up doing. By May, Mauricio will have had a season and a half to assess the team...to know what we need. He will have an idea where he is strong, who he could do without, and who he wants to buy. There may be some tough decisions. Some money can be found by having a clear out, but in all honesty the best players will raise the best money. I think we have to remain calm if a player like Shaw is sold in order to fund 2-3 players that MP feels he needs. Terribly unpopular, but doesn't mean we are suddenly a selling club, but one trying to finance a better team.

There are almost always one or two teams, in any given season, that go on a blinding run and impress everyone. Last season it was Swansea and West Brom. You have to say in their case it was mostly (though not entirely) down to individual players (Michu & Lukaku respectively).
We are that team this season, but we have done it as a team. Our big expensive signings have given us something but have not been the headline-grabbing successes we might have expected (i.e. Lovren and to some degree Wanyama have done well, but nobody outside of Southampton is talking about them).
Point is, of course I want to hold onto our players, and I relaly want us buy some more good ones (especialy in certain areas). Nonetheless, we have a good team with a good supply of youngsters who the management are happy to trust and promote, and if things carry on like that we have a chance of not doing what Swansea and West Brom have done...
If we sell Shaw, we have others to come in - it won't be the end of the world - though I genuinely think it would do both him and us good to hold onto him for a couple more years.

Good post but I think a lot of people have started talking about Dejan.

I beg to differ. A lot of people were talking about Dani <cool>

Lovren as a serious Man Utd target (who apparently would give 'major consideration' to going if a bid came in) is actually quite widespread now.
