i think the popularity of sport and art can be used as leverage agaunst unsavory political regimes whether we are talking about Israel, Russia , Sudan or Trump's US. I would also employ against China.

I think sport needs to get behind Ukraine,Venezuela and Palestine but not Hamas. Sport should unite
Indeed, but if that was an agreed consensus against a country competing on the international stage. As LTL has said this is about an individual human.
Some of England’s best cricketers have been South African and plenty of Russian athletes competed in the Olympics as independents. Let’s not deny or make an individuals life more difficult because of where they’re born or irony is lost.

Does McCarthys contract end at the end of the season? Maybe we can find a desperate buyer

^^This. I always say separate religion from politics. Also need to separate religion and nationality from sports.

Do we sell Ramsdale this window and buy a striker?

Not sure where we could sell him? Don’t think Newcastle will want him at this point (or at the end of the season), so think he just stays there til the summer and we re-assess

This has the feel of another 'too clever' signing again.

Would be happy to be proven wrong though given we really do need a new first team keeper for the remainder of the season.

Why? And what is a “too clever” signing?

Someone who has played 5 games in two years, regardless of level has to be a gamble.

The idea is that we will have plenty of data on his capabilities, but that has generally served us poorly (with a couple of exceptions).

There are others with more recent and relevant experience that we are looking past those to take a punt on someone who isn't playing.

I hope I am shown up, but my trust in SR on these kind of moves is low.

Of course this comes with the caveat that I assume this is for a starting GK, as we desperately are in need of one.

I would assume that one of the first questions going back and forth would be "is he actually available to start with us right now?"
