I agree,but we're only 5 points off an automatic spot. You're saying if we don't win Saturday we can forget it...I'm saying I think that's a bit premature. Of course it requires an improvement in performance,but under a new manager it's entirely possible?

Pleased you have said allegedly...From what I'm seeing and reading now with most, if not all of these names being mentioned for the managers/coach's job, is showing a distinct lack of ambition. The Takeover ,I would have expected, would have been an immediate show of intent to start the club moving in the right direction and up again.. I might be wrong or even be knee jerking but after yesterday positives with hiring Gus Poyet only for it to fall apart. The differing comments from local journalists in the media would indicate that these chancers are still pulling the strings and continue to spout falsehoods and disinformation to all and sundry.. There needs to be a Club statement as to where the Takeover is or when it is expected to be completed without any impact on the recruitment of the manager /coach. There are dozens of other questions that need answers and after the debacle last night, sooner rather than later.

Its an interesting discussion.
Did they chose Poyet and look to build a structure around him or have they got a definite idea of how they want the club run and Poyet didn't agree.
Suspect we will never fully know. But the appointment will tell us a lot.

Anyway we are racing ahead this time last week would be happy if the takeover was announced and we haven't officially had that yet

The bigger picture? How about having a gaffer who can act as a magnet to attract decent players, as we have struggled maasively with that over the years. And like it or not, getting in a 'big name' helps to achieve that imo.

Which "Big Name" manager would come to Sunderland based on the fact that most of the media has seen us as a basket case club for night on a decade?

Like it or not Sunderland arent as big a draw anymore as some of our fans would like to think we are.

I'd be worried any "big name" would be coming here for a nice fat payday - incidentally this type of appointment is exactly why we are in League 1.

We need someone who can come in and be part of a rebuild of the club and restoring our heavily damaged reputation. Until that happens I dont think we can entertain a "Big Name".

What assumptions? You based your whole argument on those two snapshots. As for Mourinho, I take it you paid no attention to his time at Madrid and the notorious trivote of three defensive midfielders.
Yes, a big name might be able to attract players and we're in League 1 with a salary cap. So we need a manager who can actually get something more out of the players we have. There's your bigger picture. The other thing that attracts players is a competent manager who they feel they can work with.
I can live with the fact that you don't think the Cowleys are good choice. So you should be able to cope with the fact that I do.

Of course it's possible I just don't see this team, regardless of manager, putting a big run together and outdoing the likes of Peterborough, Charlton and co, Hull already look certs for one spot.

I look at Peterboroughs team and normally they always fall away but they have match winners in Dembele and JCH, I don't see who does the business for us in the way they do, McGeady may come back in?

Same applies for Charlton with Aneke, Bogle, Forster Caskey and co.

I also think we need to be careful assuming the new manager has to be our manager for the next 10 years. So much can happen in football, 1 good year from an up and coming manager can see them poached by the big boys easily enough.

I like they want someone who fits the model of the club they want us to be, but there's absolutely nothing wrong with them leaving us in 2 years when we are in the championship, and us moving on to someone of a similar ilk.

Poyet and Pearson, while not big big names, fit the bill. Both have extensive league experience and success and would be a better draw for players to come. I understand we're we are and how hard it could prove to be, but if someone is going to try and tell me the best option is someone with a few years of league experience, two league clubs and the hghest they managed was the Champo for one and got sacked from, well.. not for me Clive.

The reason why we're in League one goes much further than managers, it's becasue the entire club was run like a ****ing school tuck shop for years, and that's probably being harsh on school tuck shops.

The current regime said lots of things which have turned out to be utter bollocks. Why should we believe what they said about his interview, if indeed he even was interviewed.
I think it has been said on here that the real reason we appointed him is because he was out of work and his salary would be peanuts.
