John Meacock and the horse was indeed Vakil-ul-Mulk :)

His horse names were Persian not Turkish - sorry, although I doubt that threw you much!

I'm pretty sure that ante-post was quoted at 1000-1 - probably John's fiver on him brought the odds down! I was sure he was last, but it's a long time ago now!

The horse did eventually win races and proved to be the most successful of Meacocks charges.

I found an excellent write up on this guy but instead of taking over the quiz I'll do a separate post. I award this to Ron :)

Hi Tam - I thought you'd be on to this :) He's one just for you, and I don't know the answer which is why I'm asking!

Mid to late 60's the was an elderly horse running on the flat. We are well used to seeing veteran NH horses but on the flat 9 years is considered to be about it.

This horse was 15 years of age and still racing at a moderate level granted - I'm sure I remember him running at Windsor. Was it Jimmy something, or something Jimmy? Driving me bonkers - although it doesn't take much!

Reebok, the horse doesn't spring to mind. Can you remember who trained or rode it?
Horses who were quite old include Operatic Society, Lord High Admiral, and Le Garcon D'or- they were all over 10 years old, but I can't recall the one you're thinking of.

I don't recall it either. The only name that sprung to mind was Jimmy Reppin and I know that isn't the one.

How can any other side have gone unbeaten if they didn't win the cup? They didn't qualify for the final stages but didn't actually lose a game. So it's New Zealand

You googled that, didn't you Ron?

Either way You are correct. Its quite a good one for quizzes as no one would think of New Zealand, who on paper were arguably the weakest side in the tournament. They drew all 3 of there group games, though didn't qualify.

Another good football world cup one.

In the history of the football world cup, there is only one side to go to a World Cup, and not conceed a goal. Who are they?

Is that a team that drew 3 matches 0-0 in the qualifiers and didn't go through?

It was Switzerland, although they did concede 3 goals in a penalty shoot out against Ukraine

Which horse, won a classic and the Champion Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival? Which classic did it win?

Hmmm ... Sea Pigeon was son of a Derby winner but that doesn't help! I think this one may be back in the mists of time :)

Hatton's Grace who won the St Leger (complete guess!!)
