Off-topic, but reference the closure of Birmingham's racecourse in 1965. That dealt me a severe blow to my pocket. I was just learning the ropes so to speak and was following the "horses for courses" theory. My all time best horse to follow was a fairly average animal named Black Diamond. He only ever won at Birmingham, and at prices ranging from 4-1 to 25-1, I was coining it, in my own small way. Then they closed Birmingham and he never won again as far as I know! Ok - here is one that may be a bit easy for some of you oldies Name the 1960's trainer who's horses all had (seemingly) Turkish names and were mainly rubbish. He famously ran one in the Derby - it finished last at 1000-1. An extra point for naming the horse
Give us a clue (eg another horse that ran in the same Derby). I have no idea and, seemingly, no way of finding out.
I can't look that up from here in the office, but here's a quote by Julian Wilson, describing the said trainer .... “He wore a battered trilby hat, smoked incessantly through a cigarette-holder, scattering ash indiscriminately, wrote unintelligible poetry and was quite the dottiest man that I had ever met!” And he died in 1999 RIP
