We're heavily in debt and growing more so with each passing month, and Gao lost a large portion of his fortune a few years ago when his company tanked and he had to sell off his majority stake.
It's a managed debt. The same as most people have a mortgage.

If your mortgage has an interest rate approaching 10%, and you're taking on more and more debt every year, it's not really all that managed.

"It is understood that there are at least two parties at the table, and industry sources suggest that there’s still a chance Southampton could be sold before the end of 2021, although supporters have learnt not to get too excited by such talk given their club has been on the market for quite some time".

Does anyone mind if I get too excited?

Ralph on two phones at same time "You want how much Erling? No problem, welcome aboard mush".
Picks up 2nd phone "Sorry to keep you Kylian. What's that, you want the no7 shirt? I'll have a word with Shane but can't promise anything". Ciao

I would be dead excited if it was Red Bull. Their clubs have been run really well and they have made creative, aggressive and well-planned decisions.

I doubt they'd be interested as they wouldn't find it so easy to change the name, kit and badge in England as elsewhere I don't think.

Hope that's the case anyway.

I also feel that their group has sort of grown beyond naming rights stuff. Initially there was a bit of attention grabbing about the renaming. With the Austrian league and a crap German team you can sort of get it. In the PL you’d think they’d have enough eyeballs from shirt sponsorship and stadium naming rights. Red Bull St Mary’s Stadium anyone?

A mate of mine reckons that quite a large renovation/extension project has started at the training ground. Anyone know if this is true?

His thought is that a new owner must be near as we don't have the money for it. Not sure I agree with him on that, even if the works are happening.

What makes him think we don’t have the money for it ? The money for an extension to the training ground is very different to the money for high transfer fees and wages

I’d like it to be true but it doesn’t make sense. Why commit funds we allegedly don’t have when a new owner could pull out ?

Similar to the people on the other thread talking about how sacking Ralph could be so a new owner could get someone in

In the last TSP interview with Toby Steele, if my admittedly ropey memory serves, he said something along the lines of having plans to do some work to Staplewood but that it would be prudent to push them back a few years due to all the unexpected costs with COVID etc. So would be surprised if there was anything major going on other than routine necessary things.

It's an upgrade to the gyms and recovery suites because things have moved on quite a bit since Saints first had them designed and built. One of the reasons Danny Ings spent so much time in the USA during that summer break was to get himself the best fitness treatment he could and that involved facilities Staplewood doesn't have.

The club have got planning applications lodged with New Forest council. They're building a large new, bespoke single-storey gym - with some storage rooms, side offices etc - just next to the main building and putting in a connecting corridor, and then turning the current indoor gym in the main building into a rehab centre. The space between the two buildings will be used as additional parking and storage space.

Presumably this would just be for Gao's stake? What did he pay, £200m-ish?

Seems like a huge loss but the club are in a far worse state financially than when he bought it which surely plays a part albeit not by that much. Depends how desperate he is to sell I suppose.

All that said I still don't see there being anything genuine in this.
