What makes you Question his passion and effort? Surely if he keeps us up it wouldn't do his reputation any harm plus I expect he would like to avoid a relegation his CV.

And if he keeps us up he may well get it ... And if he doesn't we have options. How is that not motivation for him?

I kind of see your point. I've said it a few times but I think we need stability and there's a chance he could be the right man for that.

However, they could offer a short term contract with a bonus for survival. That gives him motivation to keep us up, but it might not motivate him to try his very hardest. So, they could change that and just offer a two/three year deal without the bonus and then still get rid of him at the end of the season.

The result is the same but instead of paying a survival bonus we just pay off his contract. That could give him more motivation in the short term as he thinks he has a longer contract, but then in the end he still gets a similar financial 'bonus' of keeping us up?

    Maybe I'm going mad <laugh>

Pellegrino also had 2 assistants....who left with him, so can't see why SKD would lose his job....though it may change.

I don’t honestly think he’s the type of character that believes in anything less than 100% commitment and hard work. I may be wrong, but that’s how he comes across.

    Maybe:bandit:

I think an initial contract for this season is brilliant if that is what it is. His motivation to do well is strong....whether he stays or not. Hughes will put himself on the market with a gold star if he keeps us up or people will consider that it was an impossible task if we are relegated. What will do him harm is if no improvement is seen at all. Both parties are then free at the end of the season to make decisions. The worst scenario is to take a manager on a 3 year contract and it doesn't work out....that has happened to many teams. I cannot see how Hughes' motivation can be any better. I don't know how it will work out (some wins I hope), but, as a plan, a short contract is a very good option.

Which is why he could be exactly what is needed right now. Really don't get some of the reaction to this.

I also think with stoke it just went a bit stale for him after a while. He was there a long time for pl terms, it happens.

Bigger question - Dave Watson? Isn’t Eddie wotshisname, the ex-Chelsea keeper a coach for Hughes too?

I think people have forgotten how to be hopeful. They wanted MP2 to leave (tick) and a new manager come in (tick)....preferably one familiar with the EPL since that appeared to be one of Mauricio's failures (tick). I'm not sure who they thought would be interested in managing us at the moment and take the chance on us being relegated. If it is a short term contract with an experienced manager, it's a stroke of genius. No guarantees....but there never can be in football.

I can't see there being a clear out for a possibly temporary manager....any coaches coming in will be on the same contract as Hughes. We have shown in the past that we do show loyalty to staff and keep some on despite managerial changes.

Forgot about Dave Watson, mind you with only 8 games remaining we might keep everyone for now and reevaluate in the summer when we know what division we will be playing in and who we are playing in the Europa league :emoticon-0126-nerd:

Also, remember what a bloody good striker Mark Hughes was way back when. And, then remember that we can't hit a ****ing barn door from three yards away.

I just think, like most human beings, he'd be more commited and engaged if he was part of a project rather than short term fudge. I also think, again like most of us, not having one eye on the job market for next season would be of benefit. I saw Hughes play for us and whatever else you could say about him, he certainly gave his all. For the next few weeks I just want him totally concentrating on us rather than a potential job in (for example) Saudi Arabia or somewhere.

It would look fine on his cv if he keeps us up. It also would not look that bad if he took us down (depending on the manner of course) as he's taking us over in a messy state, "not my fault gov".

I'm just a sad fan who wants the manager to actually care about my club, not just do it for a payday, bonkers I know.

Funny thing motivation. Being valued is, imho, likely to create and mantain motivation and increase morale. It's not always about money or status.

Though there's bugger all evidence of this sometimes in the cynical world of football.

I think we should simply remove all mention of QPR from this. Has nobody seen the documentary on how the club was run? Comedy gold I tell you.

So, QPR aside, Hughes has done a great job at his other clubs. I for one am very happy that he's agreed to come here and at least give us a good shot at staying up.

Yep, that was my point...... showed enough management pedigree & class with Saints and, in my mind, would have been a better option (2nd time around) than where things finished up.

Yep, my thoughts exactly. We may only want to offer a short term, season end contract (& then renegotiate) & Hughes will obviously fight for much longer, knowing if he fails, he gets a massive pay-off. Not much different than Everton with BFS. They wanted him on 6 months; he wanted 2.5 years.
