Pellegrino in or out?

Well now you mention it. I'd also like to see more than one player in the box when we cross the ball, just given the fact that we are being set up to bang cross after cross hopefully into the area over and over again.

Lunacy, that would mean we might actually score some goals and we can't be doing with any of that sort of nonsense.

Actually, hold on, if we score a goal... we wouldn't need a clean sheet. More than that, if we scored two goals.. we could even afford to concede a goal and still.. win the game! Holy crap, I think we might be onto something here!

Mainly from his own quote about the 'players are slowly adapting'. JWP admitted in the Echo that the players are taking time to adapt to the new style of play and Tadic said something similar after the Liverpool defeat. Meanwhile, I think MP2 is struggling to adapt to the demands of the Premier League. The style and philosophy you describe is, of course, correct - the bit that is missing in theory and practice is converting that dominance to shots on goals and a decent goal to shot ratio.

You are hugely optimistic. I sort of admire it!

There is a lot of sense on this post but I was talking to another Saints fan earlier this week who had implied that Pellgrino needed to bring in some new faces because the squad seemed jaded and was desperately in need of freshening up. At the moment it seems we have too many squad players and not enough creative players to force a result.

It was interesting to see Rickie Lambert's comment that the club should not panic and ditch Pellegrino. I concur that the performances have been ineffectual this season as opposed to the dour yet sometimes effective results ground out under Claude Puel. Neither is an ideal solution nor can in any way be considered to field entertaining teams or at least perform in the intangible "Southampton way." However, I think Lambert is right to get behind Pellegrino with the caveat that he should be judged after the transfer window. Come the spring, I think that Pellegrino has to demonstrate his ability to mould and fashion a team in his vision with an upswing in performances and results.

Ian, I would love to agree, but an integral part of the job of a manager in *any* profession is to lift the spirit of their charges and get them performing to their potential.

To me, what is happening now, is quite the opposite. It’s that which worries me more than any technical, team or tactical deficiency.

....and before anyone comes back to me with how difficult it is because egos, money etc.

Listen, they’re kids with money. Sometimes big kids with money. I come across this a lot in my job too, and I promise you the basic managerial skillset is the same across the board, because the basic need is the same. Look at how Poch deals with them as an example, and look at how someone like Shaw has those basic needs as another example.

Some people can do that. Some people can’t. The fact there’s an obsession (and often from a tactical standpoint it makes sense) with ex-players being managers limits the pool massively,

In my (hopefully wrong) opinion, MP2 has neither the tactical (to win admiration from players) nor the man-management (to win love from kids) skills to do this at the level required.

The advantage Poch has is that he can be tough because he is in a position of strength. Winning generals find it easier to convince the troops to follow. If the manager is struggling for whatever reason, most players will be only too happy for him to take the blame. The players need to take a hard look at themselves....yes, they are suffering from the need for a finisher in the team (as MP2 is), but they can't change that....they can only take responsibility for themselves. Time for a Henry V speech from someone....if not in MP2's character, time for a player to step up...Fonte used to be the one for this. Will it necessarily produce a win? No....but at least they can look at themselves in the mirror.

We are worse under MP2 than under Puel. Right now, if it was my call I would be actively looking to sign a new manager but would not sack him until we have a replacement. If he does nothing different this weekend I expect to see performances get worse still in the run up to January as demoralisation sets in. I don't believe the guy knows what to do and I dont think the club will back him with massive signings in January. They never have and dont see them doing it for MP2. I'm pretty sure they are as unimpressed as the rest of us so why think 2-3 new players will make all the difference.
I am of a similar opinion. I still say that we are geared to playing to a strong centre forward. Our attacking midfield seem to continually look up and realise that nobody is there. Something has to be done in January, if only as just another option at least, because you can totally forget any European competition at this rate. Then the next season you have to recapture your expectation, and we are expected to be the best of the rest minimum, on the evidence of the past seasons.

Must be time to bump this one.
Any changes of heart?
Did todays' match do enough to convince that MP2 has something to give ,or were Everton that bad?

Liebherr

Just wondered if it was you who was also posting as Singing Blue 3? The style of post is almost identical, especially with the over-use of the laughing emoji ? Has anyone else noticed a similarity?

Post of the year <laugh>

@The Liebherr Legacy ? You stand accused of being SB3. How do you plead?

That's a big accusation. TLL might be many things, but probably not that.
