Here's the thing with AVB. Very different kind of pressure cooker managing Saints against managing Chelsea/Spurs. I think he got undone by that pressure as much as anything due to his youth and relative inexperience. Failure to me would be nearly getting Valencia relegated.....and yet he did a decent job with us.

I actually think Southampton could be perfect for someone like AVB to rebuild his reputation.

He was also only 33 (?) when he was manager at Chelsea. When was that 6/7/8 years ago. He's older now and more experienced. He seemed a very thorough, modern, detailed coach. He may fit the bill.

I am not championing him, just saying that in my eyes, he only failed at Chelsea and to be fair he sits in a pretty distinguished list if you view that through Russian eyes:

Jose Mourinho twice
Ancelotti
Big Phil
Ranieri
Conte (well, come on the Russain will sack him when they are bottom half again at Christmas :) )
 
I can't understand all the negativity towards AVB. Before he joined Chelsea he was tipped to be one of the best managers around. He wasn't great at Chelsea but did a decent job at Spurs. He has PL and European experience. He ticks all the boxes as far as I'm concerned.

Fran's right. Poch had recently been sacked with Espanyol bottom of La Liga and Koeman's record was patchy when we appointed him. Even Adkins had only really done well at Scunthorpe. One thing nobody can the board for is managerial appointments so I'll trust them on this.

Please not Moyes though.
 
If you want to know why people keep saying AVB, then give this a read, then factor in that he got a record high points total with Spurs and left as the third-best manager of all-time at Spurs in terms of win rate.

Gives you an insight into his character. Just the type of addictively meticulous and well-rounded person that I would imagine Les will like.

Honestly, it's really interesting and unconventional.

True, but probably for the same reason as AVB didn`t do well at Chelsea. I`ve always had a hunch that Giggs didn`t do Moyes any favours either by not fully/properly supporting him.
 
If the next manager sees us as a stepping stone it might be about the right time for Fonte to take over.

Koeman leaving means I can stop being hypocritcal about this. It's time to stop giving coaching jobs to people because they used to be good players/used to play for the club/are mates with other coaches. Some of them might become good managers eventually (we forget the ones that don't), but until then it's just jobs for the boys. If de Boer joins I will hold this thought for a few more years.

Or bring in a fellow Portuguese to manage the team for 5 years, while Jose takes his badges, manages the U21s/assists the first team manager ready to take over...
 
The reason why I'd prefer not to have Moyes (he wouldn't be a disaster) is that I never felt he had any ambition or any plan for progressing Everton beyond that top 6 level, and we're sort of there already. Not established by any means but we're there or thereabouts. Against the big boys Everton had a terrible record under him and they weren't exactly exciting to watch. I could see an argument to bring him in to maintain us at the level where we are for a while but he doesn't seem like someone to take the team up a level and the board always say they want to progress. I think we can find someone with more potential to take the team further.
