One concern for me is that if we lose Morgan, we lose Morgan's defensive positioning which is exceptional. If gaston can't excel with wanyama and Morgan protecting him, will he put in enough of a shift to cover a more attacking CM? (For example Clasie). Would a midfield of wanyama-clasie-gaston start to concede more shots at goal?

The PL doesn't seem to suit him. But he may be useful in the EL. That's not enough to keep him though, especially with his wages. If a decent offer comes in sell him. We could replace him with someone better for us!

He's looking chilled......come on Gaston show us what your made off this season please.

In the Gaston to Hull thread last season, I said something along the lines of sending him to Hull might be like a military camp, I know he didn't play an awful lot but I wonder if this was Ron's thoughts?

This season is make or break for his saints career.
I'm happy he's going to be given a chance, if there's anyone who can get the best out of him it'll be Ron. After a proper pre season with the squad I think he'll emerge a different and more comfortable player....well that's what I hope.
agreed. I think to be honest some were expecting some sort of Messi when he signed so many have been disappointed but in actual fact, he's rarely had a really bad game for us. Just not consistent.

I still hold out hope he can work out for us.

He's a luxury player who on his day will win us games :)

I lost count of the games where we dominated a game but where unable to score...

As mentioned above, this is as much about getting him in the shop window as anything else. Another loan move on the last year of his contract won't do us much good.

He is a talented player and by no means a liability. So stick him in the early qualifying games and someone might make a late bid or alternative if we get to the group stage he will be a very good squad player during the hectic opening to a season and hopefully he will do enough for someone to part with some cash in January.

I just can't seem him working out for us ... he's had too many chances, too many false dawns for me.

hi everyone......do not post often but lurk everyday to see if there are any updates. ..but ...how is Gaston one of our highest paid players.
I remember reading when he signed that he was on 9 grand in seria A and we tripled his wages to 27 grand...back then 35 grand was being bandied about as the most we pay or were willing to pay players...I imagine the new contracts and the ones that have been offered since then to players must far exceed 35 grand. .....if not then it's no wonder we cannot hold onto our best players or attract our #1 targets..personally I quite like him as a player and I hope he does well whilst in a saints shirt.
hopefully playing with the likes of mane and jayrod up top he can do the business .this is certainly his last chance in the EPL.

The brutal truth is that Ramirez isn't good enough to get on the bench at the moment. We have Pelle, Long, Rodriguez, Mane, Tadic, Juanmi and Ward-Prowse fighting for the attacking positions. Davis as an emergency option there.

The sensible thing would be to sell him, considering he's on such a high wage and offering very little.

Ramirez is not the same type of player as any of them, bar maybe Juanmi. Although whether Koeman actually wants a Ramirez-type player is a big question. Or whether Ramirez can stay healthy.

If we were to sell Ramirez, he might have to take a sizable pay cut at his new club. Which he may not be willing to do. My feeling is if Ramirez can find a team that wants him and where he will sign, they can pretty much have him. But that might not happen, in which case it's not that bad to be stuck with him. He does seem like a decent teammate and when healthy he can provide us a little something different off the bench. If he gets a couple decent games in, he can increase both his wages and options and we might get a little something for him as well.

I thought he was actually playing fairly well in 2013 before getting hurt for the thousandth time.

I am sure I read somewhere that Gaston is on £50,000 a week and our highest paid player was Dani on £74,000....
