I think an individual would have to be particularly unhinged to object to citizenship making you eligible for call up to a particular national football team (in the same way that citizenship confers a variety of other rights within the state in question) so I find it hard to believe that extending that to the team's manager is antithetical to anything.

Athletic (and it is Athletic, never Atletico or Athletico) Bilbao's recruitment policy simply states that players must be born in the Basque region or have come through junior clubs in the Basque region, so it's not really that stringent.

I think you've inferred incorrectly what my post was about. Playing for your national team was, to be selected by a committee to represent it, almost a duty of sorts, as far as I'm aware the manager was seen more as a job. At least this is how it has seemed to me, perhaps international football is outdated as a concept, also it does raise the question of fast tracking player eligibility in order to get a world class team, I think that is something we might see in the future from small rich nations, perhaps one of the Arab states.

I just find it more balanced to be coached by an Englishman, if you are only allowed to pick English players. Seems to undermine the nature of international competition to me if the richest FA were to be able to buy Pep for example as then you are relying on a different nationality to contribute to a national success.

Bilbao are an interesting case but generally speaking their policy in the modern era is outdated. I dont think that cam be compared to a national side management choice however. Apples and Pears I think.
Agree... rules Carsley out, he's Irish... Carsley, 50, held talks about becoming Republic of Ireland manager last year but opted to stay with the under-21s for another cycle.

Didn't realise Carsley is actually known for playing attacking football with the U21s.

I'm not against him stepping up having read into it a little bit.

Potter scares me a bit. I know Chelsea are a basket case but Poch went into the same basket case club and did a far superior job.

OK then, Rice example doesn't apply...therefore, as Carsley played 40 times for the Republic of Ireland, he should be excluded from the selection process.

I can't say I see it like that personally.

People move around the planet all the time and change their citizenship. If people find a new home and change their citizenship and decide they want to represent it, I have no problem with them doing so at all, I'd be all for it.

Pretty sure I will be in the minority here mind.
