A new one on me...

http://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/football/362349/Newcastle-eye-up-Lyon-star-Clement-Grenier

The Toon, through chief scout Graham Carr’s contacts, have made a succession of signings from France.

And they are now eyeing attacking-midfielder Grenier, 23, who is valued at about £10million.

The France international, who can operate wide on the right or behind a main striker, has attracted plenty of interest from England’s top flight.

Arsenal and Liverpool in particular have been linked with a move for him.

Newcastle are also expected to sign Montpellier midfielder Remy Cabella, also 23, in the summer.

Cabs away, two players in, and a bit in the bin for MA.

More players linked with and we won't be signing any of them. It will be like Erdinc, Gomis, etc all over again. We've been linked with Luuk de Jong for a while but according to the player we haven't made a bid for him which is no surprise to most of us. Cabella probably won't happen either. Cisse is apparently on the verge of leaving and if we don't bring in anyone that will leave us by the end of the season with a loanee in Remy who will most likely be off and Shola who I pray to loving Christ is gone - and that leaves us with no strikers whatsoever!

I really want us to sign some reinforcements but most of us fans know as the clock is ticking down it will be the same **** like always. The only 'surprise' will be one of our players like Cabaye or Krul will slip out the door on the last day - cue all the bullshit of 'Not paying over the odds, couldn't get it over the line, new contract for Shola who works so hard, blah blah ****ing blah.....'

I would sell cabaye only if we could get in cabella this summer and grenier now. That would be some business. I think grenier will be better than Yohan in a few years. Cabella would be a big boost as well.

Looks a canny player

Some Robert-esque free kicks in that clip. Certainly looked like he'd be an exciting option. I've read that he's a bit lightweight though and is too easily muscled off of the ball. If that is the case playing in France he might find the Premier League a bit of a shock to the system.

L'Equipe: Newcastle United have contacted Lyon for the transfer of Clement Grenier, they claim. #OL #NUFC

French media claiming an £11m offer has been made. I assume Grenier is a replacement for Cabaye, rather than an 'instead of Cabella'? Anyone got any insight? Transfermarkt reckons Grenier's a CM/AM, whereas Cabella is more like Ben Arfa in terms of position.

Either way I think the club are well aware that Cabaye is going to go. It's one thing when Wenger turns up, it's quite another when Dubai come calling. I also think Pardew wants a dedicated number 10 type player to replace him; that would give more time for Anita, who's probably ready to be considered a first choice player. Either way it's not the end of the world and we've all expected it since August.

Well put.
I can see us getting this chap in now... Cabaye out... with Obertan on loan somewhere (I hope).
Come the summer I can see HBA on his way with Cabella incoming.
The problem is.. if we wait till the summer for RC then his value may go up and other teams may put a bid in.
If I were Mike I'd negotiate fees now for both players and add together that value... then get PSG to pay it.
This is exactly what happened with Torres to Chelsea as Liverpool wanted £15m profit after signing Ac and basically let us inflate the price knowing Chelsea were ultimately paying.

Get French Football News understands that Newcastle United have tabled a bid worth €13m (including €2m in bonuses) to try and land Lyon attacking midfielder Clement Grenier.

L’Equipe reported this morning that Newcastle had made contact with Lyon. We however understand that Lyon have yet to formulate a proper response to this offer but they will most likely reject it as Jean Michel Aulas would need a sizeable offer to part with his starlet.

Newcastle may turn their attention to Yoann Gourcuff if their attempts to sign Grenier fail, something that Aulas would prefer anyway.

Meanwhile, Olivier Letang, the PSG Sporting Director has travelled to England today and is hoping to leave with Yohan Cabaye. Negotiations are now in an advanced stage for the transfer of the central midfielder but there has been little discussions in terms of personal terms. There are still doubts whether or not Cabaye will be convinced to move to PSG this month.

More to follow.

Don't want to seem negative but didn't napoli have a 17m euro offer turned down last summer? I'm just hoping this is more than the usual "couldn't get it over the line" posturing we so often see.

So said the reports. We don't really know how accurate the figure was though, or how much of was up front. Unless things have changed we know the majority of any offer we make will be an immediate cash payment which is probably more tempting. Still, I'd be surprised if the offer was accepted.
