I think Reading offered Quinn a 3 year deal which we weren't prepared to do. Hard as it was to see players like Rosenior and Mcshane released you can understand (given our history of financial meltdowns) exactly why it was done. We are in the championship, the ££££££ is in the PL so we have to cut our cloth.
We release Harper and now we are supposed to be desperate to get a goalkeeper. OK I can understand it if we get somebody young but it's not exactly saving us money in the short term.

If we have a "Championship squad" we are unlikely to get promoted. Teams who get promoted from the Championship usually have a first team who could be in a Premier League squad. When they get promoted they would then get about half a new first team squad, the rest of the team are from the promoted first team and the rest are released or move to being squad players.

A previous poster has listed a first team that could play in the PL. We would just need to add to that number

What a crock of ****

Harper was on RH on Wednesday night. He told Burns and Swan that he understood the decision to release him given that the other two keepers had years left on their contracts. Neither SB - nor any of us I suspect - were expecting howlers from both of our keepers in the opening few games.

After all it's not like it's happened before

No way would Quinn, macca & rosy get a game with the squad we're getting together! They were out of contract and you do the right thing for the club and get rid! You pay the wages to the ones that are still on the books! It's simple maths.

Where has £2.2m for Jelavic come from? I doubt we'd sell him unless we had to. Why would we? And why at such a loss?

He's better than Gray, Gayle or any other striker people want us to go spend tens of millions on.

I'm not being funny, but with you living in Madrid, is it safe to say you don't see us play very often? I'm all for criticising players if it is justified and you've physically seen them play badly. But Meyler really isn't that bad and on Wednesday night he was excellent.
surprisingly I find time to watch a fair few matches live, and come over and watch a lot of games. I'll be there today too. And off the top of my head I can never remember a time when Meyler had an outstanding game. He has has a few decent matches when he retained possession by passing it back and then sideways etc etc. we'll done. My favourite was when we were playing Leicester at home losing 1.0 and we broke with Meyler he ' sprinted 10 yards, stopped, then passed the ball back. Meyler. Love him for his effort but making out he is this world beater is a joke. Average Championship centre mid. Nothing more

The truth about Meyler is probably half way between what the two of you are saying. Wednesday evening was his best game for us by far and he showed what he can do at this level. He needs to add consistency to his game and that is clear because in the PL his limitations were there for all to see. Who knows - maybe a few good performances and his confidence will rise and we might see a very different player to the one we saw last season?

We let go all the players who were not really PL standard and have tried to keep all the better players who are still after the wage cut on bigger wages then any other championship players ... Yes we lost brady and chester.. so we have a very strong squad which we need only one or two players..

The squad we had should never have gone down but we did.. it would IMO be a bigger failing if we dont go straight back up with the squad we have

So at the end of the season we can also say: "The squad we had should have got us promotion but it didn't!"
