That looks like a very staged event to try to get some interest back in the oscars. In the full clip, Smith is laughing at the 'joke'.

 

Some news channels saying it was slap others say a punch, either way you would have thought it would be clearly picked up by the blokes microphone.

Possibily, if so, it's in very poor taste, and whoever decided it should be done, should know better.

 

If it isn't staged, Smith has just committed a criminal offence in front of millions of witnesses. He also must have one of the weakest punches around, especially given his training in his role for Ali. It was very generous of Chris Rock to lean forward to accommodate it too.

 

Looks to me like he slapped him with an open palm. It also looks real to me. I think Rock looks totally taken aback.

He might have been laughing along to the earlier jokes but his wife was very pissed when he joked about her alopecia.

I guess we'll never know though.
