"Hampered soon after start, held up off the pace in rear, 16th straight, closing when not clear run entering final 2f, still plenty to do when not clear run carried left and switched right over 1f out, 7th and headway 1f out, strong run to lead near finish"

When you look at it like that, maybe Wings of Eagles wasn't so bad. With a clear run maybe he would have been an impressive 5l Derby winner, in a pretty fast time. We'll never know. Conversely, maybe the placed horses were flattered. We may get a better idea of that on Saturday

WOE placed in the best 3 year old race in Europe at Curragh with a broken knee cap, shame for that injury, we are going to miss out on a superstar horse. He hadn't much to beat in the English one but won as he liked once in the clear after a rough passage.

its almost a miracle that he only managed to win 2 of his 7 races, im starting to wonder if perhaps the broken kneecap occurred before his debut and he won a maiden and the Derby in spite of it

I would be tempted to place lay Ulysses for all i'm worth as well. Barring it's such a poor looking field, bookies look to have it pretty much spot on. Front two and maybe the reincarnation of Pegasus in Eminent are all that can win. At least when Aidan has 4 in you can't accurately figure out which one will win, or be thereabouts on a given day.

Good luck those wagering

If Ulysses were trained by anyone other than Michael Stoute, I'd probably agree with you.

On the face of it though, this race has a lovely shape for taking on the favourites, in which case you'd be mad to rule out a Stoute trained 4yold with improvement in him.

At Sandown the ground is lightning fast. Battaash just broke the course record in the sprint.

I walked across the track from Esher station and I could not get my heel in the ground on either course, so if your horse does not like it fast forget it today.
