I worked 11 years on the door of a 2000 capacity music venue inhabited by Hell's Angels and every hard nut and gang in the Midlands.

We had everyone from the Forest Naughty Forty to the fairground travellers take us on.

We were just a bunch of normal blokes who had no option but to win every fight and keep order.

Every now and again we'd have some self proclaimed champion boxer/kung fu master/kick boxing top man want to beat us.

In all that time, and in the time of my visits since I left, never have any of them ever come out on top.

I sometimes wonder why that is.

I learned a lot from the older lads about the psychological dynamics of a fight.

People announcing they were 'All England kick boxing champion' would intimidate some poor kid before they kicked them in the head.

But hard bitten construction workers, used to spending weeks with Irish navvies, wouldn't back down so easily and could take a punch without flinching.

We had road crew, tyre fitters, foundry lads and blokes from the cattle market slaughterhouse in our team and they were hard lads.

Daft sods who'd 'learned how to smash a breeze block' thought they could just strut around and take the mickey <doh>

You can teach somebody all the fighting moves in the world but you cant teach them to be a fighter. Your born with that.

Best point ever that, you can never be trained how to fight the same as you cannot be trained to play snooker..

Mentality makes a fighter and natural movement..

Like dodging Pigeon **** under a rail bridge..<ok>

I was in a rough pub in the Jewellery Quarter of Birmingham to meet Frankie Wheatley from Peterlee.

I introduced 2 of my sons, one of whom is a very big & fit lad, who stands about 6'2".

For a laugh I told Frank that he was getting on and my son was going to sort him out so he could take his place.

His demeanour changed and he drew his finger across his throat.

As he pounded his heart with a massive fist he fixed his black eyes on me and said, "He's a big lad mate ....... but he doesn't have the heart!"

    Scary!

Ask @Somebodys pinched my sombrero what he's like and you'll know what I'm rambling on about.

(But you might actually know him and the lads from Shotton, Peterlee, Wheatley Hill, etc.)

Yes, when we were sat in the corner of the Victory.

He's an ex-bouncer who is now in the process of becoming a minister in the Church of England <laugh>

Frank is one of the hardest blokes I've ever met and well known ........ Sombrero knows him well.

He once took a group of lads from Central Station to SJP and made it obvious they were Sunderland.

No one came near them and even the Newcastle doormen said they were untouchable on the day.

I can vouch for Frankys reputation. He's a red and white legend in these parts. I've met him quite a few times and he's been nothing but a decent bloke to me. Always had a story or two to tell, really good craic. A real hard bugger by all accounts, and I've heard many a tale about him, a bit like yourself. <ok>

Yes its a quality book mate. Ive got Roy Shaws book aswell which is equally as good. They both completely contradict eachother though so its hard to tell whos telling the truth.
Bartley Goram King of the gypsies is one of my favourites.

When I was doing repo work, for a company called Raleigh Finance, I had to go on a Gypsy camp in Newark, Tolney Lane.
