This thread is about discussing respect for people who sacrificed their lives and health for others. If you have anything to say on the subject, share it, if not, piss off.
Wow! Is it three years since I started this thread?
I received a letter from the Royal British Legion at the end of last week asking me to consider making a contribution. It was quite clever in that it was targeted to me specifically and included mention of what could well have been a distant relative of mine who was sadly killed during The Great War. I have a fairly unusual surname (no, not Hoop!) making it quite likely that there's a family connection there. I was already aware that my paternal grandfather had been gassed on the Somme and consequently invalided out of the army - quite probably saving his live and making that of my father's, my own and my children's altogether possible - but hadn't come across another with the same surname before.
I have resolved to find out more about my fallen relative.

I also recently came across an article about Arnold Ridley, the playwright and Private Godfrey of "Dad's Army" fame, in which his son said how much he disliked the character of Godfrey, particularly as he had been a conscientious objector in WW1 and had therefore become the medical orderly in the Home Guard platoon. Ridley himself had been an officer of some distinction and had been badly wounded in that war, but hadn't received recognition for an act of valour his son felt had been deserved. Of course, like the gentlemen many of his generation were, he never spoke bitterly about it; in fact he seldom talked about his experiences, never wishing to relive them, although they inevitably revisited him in his nightmares.
I gather John Laurie (Pte. Fraser) also saw service in The Great War.

I'll throw out an alternative opinion on the wearing of poppies.
I once (my methods and feelings aren't always consistent) gave a donation to the tin but didn't take the poppy.
It does cost a small something to make after all so why not save that cost?
It also strikes me that it is very well known and supported so is it bad form not to publicly support the appeal (irrespective of having the same sentiments as those that wear them)?

Could be problematic
The fukk is Harry Redknapp and two other Donkey's on SSN wearing poppies for weeks before the event? Clampits probably don't even know what it means. On the other hand it mightn't have been their fault, it could have been Sky's.
I fear the annual appeal has turned into a kind of circus
In regards to making a donation without the poppy ......... I wouldn't like to lose sight of the poppy, it is a symbol representing those who lost their lives.
I guess we should all do what we are comfortable with, providing of course, we continue to acknowledge them.
There is no right or wrong ...... Well, the only wrong is those who use it to take a stance, ie: McLean.
It probably it is Swords and in truth, l thought as such not long after making the post but l guess the point l'm trying to make is that being that the poppy represents those who have served us and have fallen, if people for whatever reason don't agree with it, don't use it to make a stance, be respectful and ignore it.
Find another platform to get their point across.
Yes Swords, people in general tend to buy a poppy to show the acknowledgement of those who have fallen.
Sadly, our ww2 vets are all but gone. An English friend of mine from London, an ex crew from Bomber Command, past away last week. A lovely chap, very humble.
I can tell you that this gentleman fell out of his rear gun turret / aircraft, whilst taking off! ( said he wasn't the first nor the last to so it )
