You can understand why though. Without him they're ****ed. Their best strategy is to claim nothing noteworthy happened and hope that if they say it often enough, and with enough conviction, that people will actually start to believe it. It's a long shot obviously, but it's basically their only hope.
Privately they'll be furious with him, but in public they have to support him, at least for now.
