You are so right there always is a melee when free kicks are taken into the box.......Until referee's make a stand and get the players to cut it out. After all having your hands on or around a player is actually a foul. The trouble is referees have over the years let more and more go and not blown for this sort of thing.
Sadly it is a sign of the times......having said that though we should now see consistency, but I'm doubtful there will be.

Following on from Part I of this thread...

After a night's sleep I feel a bit more objective about last night's game. I still feel very angry about the incompetence of the referee but for the moment, until there is more evidence, I will back off about accusations of corruption. As has been pointed out, some of his decisions did favour Croatia and he didn't make any attempt to protect Marcelo.

Here's the thing though: people are saying that penalties like that are given all the time. Well tournament football is all about consistency from the referees, so I will expect to see a penalty given at the very first corner in the Mexico v Cameroon game this afternoon. Every time a corner takes place in any level of professional football you will see jostling and physical contact far worse than we saw Dejan Lovren commit on Fred, but to my knowledge, penalties are hardly ever given. I think I am right in saying that the only one given under these circumstances in the Premier League last season was for Jose Fonte grabbing Mertesacker at the Emirates.

If the referee last night was merely incompetent, then he should be sent home to Japan. If he represents the standard expected of all officials at this World Cup then I despair. If he is part of a conspiracy to make sure Brazil win the tournament in return for the vast fortunes FIFA and its sponsors will make, not that I actually think that is the case, then heads need to roll.

As I spent half an hour composing this before TSS closed the thread I didn't want it to get lost.

Yeah, sorry Chilco. I was aware that you'd put a bit of effort into it, as well. By all means copy any paragraphs over. I've done that myself, in the past. FWIW, I agree with the points you made. Where I still differ is that I am by no means satisfied that FIFA are squeeky clean on this. If some investigative journalist found corruption, which went down to referee level and favoured the Home countries, it would not surprise me in the least. I'd probably raise one eyebrow slightly. :)

As to a comment earlier in the old thread about the vast majority of refs giving that penalty, I would suggest that, in that case, the standard of refereeing needs to increase dramatically. However, it's my belief that the vast majority of refs wouldn't have given that penalty. I know this is South America, where players going down under breezes is rife, but can you imagine a decent ref like Howard Webb giving that..? Not in 20 WC tournaments.

It's not basketball; having your hands on a player is not a foul if you're not impeding him.

Agreed. It's frustrating people saying "well, it was a penalty if you apply the rules", or "Dejan shouldn't have done it, he was taking a risk" - well no, no it wasn't, and no he wasn't. It just wasn't a penalty by any stretch of any imagination.

The ref made an honest mistake, he would have been well within his rights to show a red card for some of the abuse he took after that, the lino gave the second one I think, which was also debatable. Other than that I thought the ref was pretty lenient and got most decisions correct.

People need to get it in perspective. Corruption?? Come on, seriously??

God bless them, you are right AL. Some of them are awful sometimes. But I think nearly all of them would hope that they did the best they could and hoped not to make any mistakes.

It would be nice to see more often, when they have got it wrong, to come out and admit it and apologise. I think that would help people to get over it if they did.

This isn't just about the penalty. Croatia had a goal disallowed which should have been given. Rakitic was fouled just before Brazil's third.

It's not corruption, it's just the usual standard of refereeing we have come to expect. They are rubbish.

So you're judging the rest of the referee's at the World Cup based on one performance. :emoticon-0114-dull:

No, like Dan said, the whole of football's referees. I know you will disagree regardless, but the standard of officiating is appalling in football. I'm not saying that referees don't do their best, but it clearly isn't good enough.

So what's your proposal to improve the standard of refereeing, rather than just criticising it every time?
